The image shows a young open cluster of stars in the constellation Serpens Cauda, surrounded by a colorful deepsky field of glowing gas, known as the Eagle Nebula, M16. Located at a distance of 7,000 light-years away from us, the nebula features a dusty sculpture made famous by the Hubble Space Telescope’s close-up, known as the “Pillars of Creation”. These dense, dusty pillars, with light-years in length, are the location of new star formation, and are sculpted by the stellar winds from nearby newborn stars. At left of the main pillars is another dusty starforming column known as the Fairy of Eagle Nebula. The gas and dust in the giant cloud of M16, has given birth to hot and young stars in the star cluster embedded in the nebula. The ultraviolet energy from these stars cause the nebula to glow with red hues, from the ionized hydrogen-alpha emission.

Localizada a uma distância de 7.000 anos-luz de nós, a nebulosa apresenta uma escultura empoeirada que ficou famosa pelo close-up do Telescópio Espacial Hubble, conhecida como “Pilares da Criação”. Esses pilares densos e empoeirados, com vários anos-luz de comprimento, são o local de formação de novas estrelas e são esculpidos pelos ventos estelares de estrelas recém-nascidas próximas. À esquerda dos pilares principais está outra coluna densa de formação de estrelas conhecida como a Fada da Nebulosa da Águia. O gás e a poeira na nuvem gigante da M16 ,deram origem a estrelas jovens e quentes no aglomerado de estrelas embutido na nebulosa. A energia ultravioleta dessas estrelas faz com que a nebulosa brilhe em tons vermelhos, a partir da emissão ionizada de hidrogénio-alfa.
