Stunning View of Milky Way and Comet A3 Atlas in Between a Dead Tree Captured with Smartphone Google Pixel 9 Pro XL from Dark Sky® Alqueva in Portugal
I believe this is probably one of my best images of the Comet A3 Atlas. And if I tell you that it was not taken with any fancy DSLR or Mirrorless camera…but, with the new smartphone: Google Pixel 9 Pro XL…insane, right?! This is a photo I captured from Dark Sky® Alqueva territory, in Portugal, on 25th October 2024 and it shows the Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas, crossing the skies close to Milky Way galaxy and in between the branches of a dead tree, near Alqueva lake. What an incredible nigh! This is a single 4 minutes integration in Night Mode, without star tracker, where the Pixel 9 combines 15 short exposures of 16 seconds each. The 50 MP Raw (DNG 16 bits file) was then processed in Adobe Camera Raw like a normal nightscape astrophotography. The Smartphone Google Pixel 9 Pro XL they will definitely be a game changer!

Esta é uma foto que captei a partir do território certificado do Dark Sky® Alqueva, em Portugal, no dia 25 de Outubro de 2024 e que mostra o Cometa C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas, a cruzar os céus perto da Via Láctea e visível por entre os ramos de uma árvore morta localizada perto do lago Alqueva. Que noite incrível! Esta é uma integração única de 4 minutos no Modo Nocturno, sem seguimento das estrelas, onde o Pixel 9 combina 15 exposições curtas de 16 segundos cada. O Raw de 50 MP (ficheiro DNG de 16 bits) foi então processado no Adobe Camera Raw como uma astrofotografia nocturna normal. O Smartphone Google Pixel 9 Pro XL será definitivamente um game changer, num futuro próximo!

A Giant Eye Staring at the Night Sky
This unusual portrait is showing what could be a giant eye, viewed from our lovely planet Earth while staring deep into the beauty of our Milky Way Galaxy, fulfilled by billions of stars, is important to remember that it is indeed our true cosmic home. After the success of my Martian Eye released in 2019 and captured from Ojos del Salar, in Atacama desert, I decided that it would be the right time to release a new refreshed view, but this time, captured from my dear home at Alqueva in Portugal. Originally captured in landscape format, the large mosaic comprises 25 still images photographed above the largest manmade lake in Europe, the Alqueva lake, in one of the wonderful nightscapes available at Dark Sky® Alqueva preserve. Besides dozens of emission nebulae and dark dust spread along the Milky Way path, and the presence of Andromeda Galaxy as a small oblong difuse shape, the image shows a greenish smooth light surrounding the horizon, due to the presence of airglow (photochemical luminescence of the atmosphere), revealing what we can find in the summer sky from northern hemisphere, if we could find a dark place farway from city lights. Sometimes I hear people saying that they feel small when they realise about the scale of the Universe, but I feel different and this is what impels me to produce this wide panoramic scene. My main intention is to show how big we must feel for being part of this big cosmic canvas where life is so perfect and beautiful in all senses. I believe as quoted by Fiódor Dostoiévski..”Beauty will save the world”.
PT: Este retrato incomum mostra o que poderia ser um olho gigante, visto do nosso adorável planeta Terra, enquanto observa profundamente a beleza da nossa Via Láctea, preenchida por biliões de estrelas, é importante lembrar que é este o nosso verdadeiro lar cósmico. Após o sucesso do meu “Olho Marciano” lançado em 2019 e captado a partir dos Ojos del Salar, no deserto do Atacama, decidi que seria o momento certo para lançar uma nova visão renovada, mas desta vez, captada a partir do nosso querido Alqueva, em Portugal. Originalmente captado em formato de paisagem, o grande mosaico compreende 25 imagens estáticas fotografadas acima do maior lago artificial da Europa, o lago Alqueva, em uma das maravilhosas paisagens nocturnas disponíveis no Dark Sky® Alqueva. Além de dezenas de nebulosas de emissão e poeira escura que se espalham ao longo do caminho da Via Láctea, e da presença da galáxia de Andrómeda visível como uma pequena mancha difusa elíptica, a imagem mostra uma luz suave esverdeada cercando o horizonte, devido à presença do airglow (luminescência fotoquímica da atmosfera), revelando o que podemos encontrar no céu de verão do hemisfério norte, se pudéssemos encontrar um lugar escuro longe das luzes da cidade. Às vezes ouço pessoas dizer que se sentem pequenas quando percebem a escala do Universo, mas eu sinto-me diferente e é isso que me impulsionou a produzir esta ampla cena panorâmica. A minha intenção foi a de mostrar o quão grandes nos devemos sentir por fazer parte desta infinita tela cósmica onde a vida é tão perfeita e bela em todos os sentidos. Summer Nights Fullfilled with the Bright Core of Milky Way Galaxy
Summer nights are now fullfilled with the bright core of Milky Way, visible in the beginning of the night, if you are faced south and faraway from city lights. This short exposure single portrait, was taken recently from our dark skies at Dark Sky® Alqueva region, in Portugal. I took this photo as a recent assignment to a new project but I’m using it here also to share with some of you, that it’s not always necessary to have a modified astro camera to capture the beautiful glow of our cosmic home in space. This single shot of only 12MP, was captured with Sony A 7sIII and a Sony G Master 50mm lens at f1.2, which is very handy even knowing that its best performance is at night videography, running a higher ISO up to 400,000.!

Short Exposure of 4 secs Reveals the Magnificent Core of Milky Way Galaxy with a Sony A7s III as Seen from Dark Sky® Alqueva
Sometimes we get people (visitors and students) thinking that they might need an astro modified camera to capture the Milky Way….but, it’s totally wrong! You simply don’t!! As well as you don’t need a star tracker and you don’t need to stack images! So I took this recent shot to prove why you don’t need any of this. The image is just a single short exposure of 4 seconds taken from one of the best skies in the world, our lovely @darkskyalqueva reserve in Portugal. I used a normal Sony A7sIII which has only 12 megapixels at ISO 2500, with a great lens the 50mm G Master at f1.2 So what do you really need? In my opinion the answer is a Great Sky and a Great Lens, everything else nowadays is not essential. Of course a good camera will help special if it has a nice performance in low light conditions but with the first two conditions met, ISO 2500 is more than enough if you don’t want to burnout the image! An astro modified camera would just add a bit of more reddish hues in Lagoon nebula, still visible in top central edge of the image with a none modified camera as this one. So if you are not a professional or not intend to make deepsky, you probably don’t need a modified camera for a nice summer views and the Milky Way! Invest on good lenses first and go hunting for the darkest skies on Earth!
PT: Por vezes, temos pessoas (visitantes e estudantes) que pensam que podem precisar de uma câmara astromodificada para captar a Via Láctea… mas é totalmente errado! Você simplesmente não precisa!! Além disso, não precisa de um startracker e não precisa de empilhar imagens! Por isso, tirei esta foto recente para provar porque é que não precisa de nada disto. A imagem é apenas uma curta exposição de 4 segundos tirada de um dos melhores céus do mundo, a nossa adorável reserva Dark Sky® Alqueva, em Portugal. Utilizei uma Sony A7sIII normal que tem apenas 12 megapixeis a ISO 2500, com uma grande lente a 50mm G Master a f1.2.Então, o que precisa realmente? Na minha opinião, a resposta é: um Grande Céu e uma boa objectiva, tudo o resto hoje em dia não é essencial. É claro que uma boa câmara ajudará especialmente se tiver um bom desempenho em condições de pouca luz, mas com as duas primeiras condições cumpridas, ISO 2500 é mais do que suficiente se não quiser queimar a imagem! Uma câmara astro modificada apenas acrescentaria um pouco mais de tons avermelhados na nebulosa da Lagoa, ainda visíveis na margem central superior da imagem com uma câmara não modificada como esta. Portanto, se não é um profissional ou não pretende fazer céu profundo, provavelmente não precisa de uma câmara modificada para ter uma bela vista de Verão da Via Láctea! Invista primeiro numas “boas lentes” e vá à caça dos céus mais escuros da Terra!

Allsky view of the Nortnern Lights above Dark Sky® Alqueva Headquarters and Observatory as seen at 38º Latitude in Portugal
Captured on May 10th, 2024 after a sequence of CME’s which triggered a strongest magnetic storm in the last 20 years. The fulldome fish-eye image, reveals an impressive display of northern lights as seen from my location at 38º. First moment I noticed was around 11PM above our Dark Sky® Alqueva headquarters and observatory, in Cumeada village near Reguengos, Portugal!! I could even see it with my naked eyes around 23h15, specially the vertical fast moving bands. So I did a few fish-eye all sky shots with my Canon 8-15mm. I could photograph more Aurora Borealis than when I visited Iceland for the first time back in 2019. I was expecting something more subtle in reddish hues, but it was full of colors and sometimes going very high almost reaching the Zenith.
PT: Captada em 10 de maio de 2024, após uma sequência de CME’s que desencadeou a tempestade magnética mais forte dos últimos 20 anos, a imagem allsky revela uma exibição impressionante das auroras boreais vista a partir da minha localização a 38º. O primeiro momento que notei foi por volta das 23h, por cima da nossa sede e observatório Dark Sky® Alqueva, na vila da Cumeada, perto de Reguengos, Portugal. Conseguiam-se ver subtilmente a olho nu por volta das 23h15, principalmente as faixas verticais em movimento. Tirei então algumas fotografias do céu com a lente olho de peixe – allsky – 8-15mm da Canon. Interessante também de referir, que consegui fotografar mais Auroras Boreais do que quando visitei a Islândia pela primeira vez em 2019. Esperava algo mais subtil em tons avermelhados, mas estava cheio de cores e por vezes a subir muito alto quase atingindo o zénite.

All Sky VR 360º – Winter Milky Way and Jupiter Shining During Geminids Meteor Shower 2023
A full dome and 360º Virtual Reality nightscape scene reveals a mosaic of single shots with a composite of more than 100 meteors star aligned captured in 2 consecutive nights during Geminids meteor shower 2023. The composite shows the Radiant located in Gemini constellation, near the blueish star Castor, the single point in the sky where all meteors seems to appear due to the perspective. The background is a mosaic image made of single untracked shots where a starry sky shows the path of Winter Milky Way, full of beautiful bright constellations and nebulae, shining in reddish hues from Hydrogen emission and against the bright light of planet Jupiter, while all the sky is fulfilled by meteors. In the scene, is also visible the silhouette of one of my students enjoying the starry sky near Alqueva lake while all the sky is fulfilled by meteors. 2 Nights Comprised in One Epic Scene to Reveal the Show of Geminids Meteor Shower 2023
The image is the result of a fair amount of work while star aligning and combining 10 folders of hundreds of Gigabytes from different cameras that I setup for 2 consecutive nights, during Geminids meteor shower 2023. I caught more than 100 meteors in total from the brightest ones, to the faintest streaks. The composite shows the Radiant located in Gemini constellation, near the blueish star Castor, the single point in the sky where all meteors seems to appear due to the perspective. The background is a panoramic image made of single untracked shots where a starry sky shows the path of Winter Milky Way, full of beautiful bright constellations and nebulae, shining in reddish hues from Hydrogen emission. At left, is one of my students enjoying the starry sky near Alqueva lake while all the sky is fulfilled by meteors. The image was captured from Dark Sky® Alqueva, in Portugal. A full dome and 360º Virtual Reality nightscape scene reveals a mosaic of single shots with a composite of 100 meteors star aligned captured in 4 consecutive nights during Perseids meteor shower 2023. The image shows the Radiant located in Perseus constellation, the single point in the sky where all meteors seems to appear due to the perspective. The background starry sky shows the path of Milky Way, as well as the Zodiacal light shining above Pleiades star cluster and against the bright light of planet Jupiter, while all the sky is fulfilled by meteors. 4 Nights Comprised in One Epic Scene to Reveal the Show of Perseids Meteor Shower 2023
The image is the result of a fair amount of work while star aligning and combining 8 folders of 300 GB from different cameras that I setup for 4 consecutive nights, during Perseids meteor shower 2023. I caught exactly 100 meteors in total from the brightest ones, to the faintest streaks. The composite shows the Radiant located in Perseus constellation, the single point in the sky where all meteors seems to appear due to the perspective. A Tree, a Man and the Mesmerising Presence of our Cosmic Home
Feeling blessed to live so close to Dark Sky® Alqueva reserve where I can easily reach places like this, places that I love and where pristine skies are still possible to see. On this particular night taken during one of my workshops at the end of Summer, the airglow was visible and painted the background sky with greenish hues. In front of the airglow, a few high clouds announce the proximity of Winter, while Milky Way is straight up to the Zenith, the core is getting low and close to the horizon and in a few weeks no longer will be visible until next Summer. In the foreground, my silhouette as a stargazer stands at the side of a lonely wonderful tree which rises leafy before the majesty presence of our cosmic home.
PT: Sinto-me abençoada por viver tão perto do Dark Sky® Alqueva onde posso chegar facilmente a lugares como este, lugares que me apaixonam e onde ainda é possível disfrutar de um céu pristino. Nesta noite em particular, que decorreu durante um dos meus workshops no final do verão, o airglow era visível e pintava o céu de fundo com tons esverdeados. Diante do airglow, algumas nuvens altas anunciam a proximidade do Inverno, enquanto a Via Láctea sobe em direcção ao zénite, o núcleo vai ficando baixo e próximo ao horizonte e em algumas semanas não será mais visível até ao próximo Verão. Em primeiro plano, está a minha silhueta enquanto observador de estrelas, lado a lado com uma árvore solitária mas que se ergue frondosa diante a grandeza desta paisagem cósmica.

Capturing With Passion the Heart of Milky Way While Shinning above a Rocky Formation in Lut Desert
More than 12h distance from Tehran, capital of Iran, stands an impressive, magical and pristine place, called Lut Desert. Besides being beautiful and one of the hottest places on the Earth surface, it shows that the sky above us has no boundaries and must be preserved as a Human Heritage. This is probably one of the best skies I’ve been shooting so far around the world, a unique moment shared with new friends I met there. The image shows the core of Milky Way above a rocky formation. By accident, my friend Mauricio was visible in the field while controlling his camera in one of the time lapse shots I did. I think it end up with a perfect light and aligned with a scene don’t you think ?!
PT: A mais de 12h de distância de Teerão, capital do Irão, fica um lugar impressionante, mágico e intocado, chamado Deserto de Lut. Além de lindo e um dos lugares mais quentes da superfície terrestre com o record de 70º registado, mostra que o céu acima de nós não tem fronteiras e deve ser preservado como Património da Humanidade. Este é provavelmente um dos melhores céus que fotografei até hoje em todo o mundo, um momento único compartilhado com novos amigos que conheci lá. A imagem mostra o núcleo da Via Láctea acima de uma formação rochosa. Por acaso, meu amigo Mauricio estava visível no campo enquanto controlava sua câmara em uma das fotos da sequência time lapse que fiz. The Arch of Milky Way Above the Rocky Formations of Lut Desert in a Colorful Nightscape Scene
The arch of Milky Way shining bright above Lut Desert rocky formations in a panoramic image of single shots, taken in a pristine magical sky. Summer triangle dominates the center of the colorful nightscape scene showing that the Universe is anything but black. Kerman is the main city located at around 1h driving from Lut desert, while Tehran in Iran, stays at 12h distance. During our trip I only had one day to shoot the night sky so I tried to give my best to show the beauty of this place. Hope you like it!

Zodiacal Light with Mars and Jupiter in the Pristine Sky of Lut Desert in Iran
A panoramic image of single shots taken in a pristine magical sky, features the arch of Milky Way shining bright above Lut desert, in Kerman, Iran, few minutes before the nautical twilight starts. Faint path of cosmic dust from Zodiacal light was visible along the Ecliptic plane where planets Mars and Jupiter were shining in a very close conjunction, near the horizon. The background sky is also featuring a smooth greenish hue from airglow. Andromeda galaxy is the faint oblong shape visible above the rocky peaks on the left side, near the beginning of Milky Way.

A Galactic Arch is Featuring the Summer and Winter Parts of Milky Way in a Panoramic Scene
A starry night scene captured at the end of Summer season from Natural Park of Noudar, in Dark Sky® Alqueva territory, shows a mosaic made of single shots with a galactic arch shinning above the Noudar quiet house and fields. The arch itself is featuring the core of “Summer Milky Way” which is gradually disappearing in the western horizon due to the time of the year, while in the opposite direction of the arch (left side), in the Eastern sky, the “Winter Milky Way” is start to appearing with Pleiades star cluster rising above the horizon. Summer Triangle is still highlighting the center of the image, with bluish star Vega near the top edge. Left center – in the beginning of the Milky Way faintest path – a bright elliptic and diffuse dot belongs to Andromeda Galaxy and below it, is also visible an even fainter light coming from Triangle galaxy. Lower center, close to the horizon and above the house roof, shows the bright light from planet Jupiter. The background sky is also featuring the greenish presence of airglow. Captured with a Sony A7sIII at ISO8000 Exp: 5 secs for each image of the mosaic with a G master lens 24mm f/1.4.

Big, by the simple fact that we can have a conscience of our limits when trying to “understand” a small fraction of what we are looking at. Arch of Summer Milky Way Shining Bright During a Total Lunar Eclipse
The image reveals a panoramic scene of single shots where the arch of Summer Milky Way shines high and bright above the wonderful century old mine of São Domingos, in Achada do Gamo, Dark Sky® Alqueva – Mértola, Portugal. In the background, Summer Triangle highlights the center of the image, with blueish star Vega near the top. Left lower center – in the beginning of the Milky Way faintest path – a bright elliptic and diffuse dot is the light coming from Andromeda Galaxy. In the lower center and between the two strcutures are shining planets Jupiter and Mars, being Saturn visible as well, but more to the center right. On the right edge, shines the dusty core of Milky Way galaxy full of emission nebulae and close to Rho Ophiuchi clouds complex, an unusual bright orange glow belongs to an eclipsed super moon for being under the Earth shadow cone.

Milky Way with Scorpius and a Red Eclipsed Super Moon
A panoramic scene of 4 singles images captured with a 70mm lens and a Vixen Polarie U tracking mount, shows the moment of totality, when a Super Full Moon decreases its lights and starts to shine in reddish hues for being under the Earth shadow cone. When this happens, a dark starry sky like Alqueva, can show the magnificent presence of Milky Way galaxy at the same time we can enjoy an eclipsed moon. But another yellow-orange bright scource of light is visible in the scene, this light belongs to Antares, a super giant red star located in the heart of Scorpius constellation, which fullfils the entire background scene. The image was captured at 5h AM, when the moon was at about 12º above the horizon of Mina de São Domingos, in Mértola, Dark Sky© Alqueva Reserve, Portugal. For this shot I’ve used a Canon 6D at ISO1250, aperture of f/2.8 and 25 seconds exposure.
PT: Um cenário panorâmico de 4 imagens (single) captadas com uma focal de 70mm e uma montagem Vixen Polarie U, revela o momento da totalidade, quando uma Super Lua Cheia diminui a sua intensidade luminosa e começou a brilhar em tons de vermelho por se encontrar sob a influência do cone de sombra da Terra. Quando isso acontece, um céu estrelado e escuro como o do Alqueva, pode mostrar a magnífica presença da Via Láctea ao mesmo tempo que podemos desfrutar de uma lua eclipsada. Mas outra fonte de luz brilhante de um amarelo-alaranjado é visível nesta cena nocturna, esta luz pertence a Antares, uma estrela supergigante vermelha localizada no coração da constelação do Escorpião, que preenche assim toda a imagem em pano de fundo. A imagem foi captada às 5h da manhã, quando a lua se situava a cerca de 12º acima do horizonte da Mina de São Domingos, em Mértola, Reserva Dark Sky© Alqueva, Portugal. Para esta foto foi usada uma Canon 6D com ISO1250, abertura de f/2.8 e uma exposição única de 25 segundos.

A Girl Stargazing Perseids With a Bright Meteor Spotted
The brightest meteor I’ve ever captured in many years and probably the most prominent from Perseids meteor shower of 2021. Caught in a single frame crossing high in the sky between Deneb and Altair star from Summer Triangle. It was a fast and bright meteor featuring a very long tail of about 36º (measured from star Rho Cygni up to Alpha Sagittae), with a half-green and half-pink violet hue due to an elevated concentration of chemical elements like magnesium (green) and calcium (pink-violet), typical in meteors from Perseids. The tail ends up with a little explosion visible as a white bluish bright flash. As soon as we saw the meteor firing, I took another two shots up to the horizon- since my camera was pointing to the zenith – this time with my girlfriend framed on it while pointing high in the same region of the sky where the meteor has crossed. The final image is a vertical panorama of single shots taken at approximately the same time.
PT: O meteoro mais brilhante que já capturei em muitos anos e provavelmente o mais proeminente da chuva de meteoros Perseidas de 2021. Captado em um único disparo enquanto brilhava alto no céu entre a estrela Deneb e a estrela Altair do Triângulo de Verão. Foi um meteoro rápido e brilhante com uma cauda muito longa de cerca de 36º (medida da estrela Rho Cygni até Alpha Sagittae), com uma tonalidade violeta meio verde e meio rosa devido a uma concentração elevada de elementos químicos como o magnésio (verde ) e cálcio (rosa-violeta), típico em meteoros de Perseidas. A cauda termina com uma pequena explosão visível como um flash branco azulado brilhante. Assim que vimos o meteoro rompendo o céu com um flash brilhante, fiz mais duas fotos até ao horizonte – já que a minha câmara apontava para o zénite – desta vez com a silhueta da minha cara metade presente na imagem, enquanto apontava para o alto na mesma região do céu onde o meteoro caiu. A imagem final é um panorama vertical de fotos captadas aproximadamente ao mesmo tempo.

Infinity Zoom, is a serie of short 4K videos where we will fly through my deep space images, starting with a wide view somewhere in one of the darkest landscape places I’ve had opportunity to visit and photograph through my journey in the world with astrophotography, up to a close intimate view where we dive deep into the core of some wonderful deep sky objects captured with a telescopic view from my observatory located in Dark Sky® Alqueva region, Portugal. In this second episode of Infinity Zoom, we departure from Atacama Desert, and dive deep into the core of Blue Horsehead Nebula. During the short voyage of about 400 light-years to reach the Blue Horsehead we will fly close to Rho Ophiuchi colorful cloud complex, lying almost at the same distant, both are located in same naked-eye region of the sky, towards the constellation of the Ophiuchus. The Cloud Complex, is one of the most colourful nebulas in space and the closest star-forming regions to the Solar System. These interstellar clouds of gas and dust contain both red emission nebulas and blue reflection nebulas. The dark brown regions are caused by dust grains, born in young stellar atmospheres, which effectively block light emitted behind them. Our final deep dive reveals the wonderful nebula IC4592, better known by it’s well distinguished shape of a Blue Horse Head. The blue reflection nebula is made up of very fine interstellar dust particles that reflects the visible light of energetic nearby stars, as Nu Scorpii, the bright blueish star which marks the eye of the Horse. Immersed in the brownish dust, is visible a second reflection nebula named IC 4601 surrounding two stars. The animation has been created using my real images, a total of 4 photographs captured at different focal distances from a wide angle landscape lens up to a telescopic view, for the final approach.

Neste segundo episódio do Infinity Zoom, partimos do Deserto do Atacama e mergulhamos profundamente no núcleo da Nebulosa Cabeça do Cavalo Azul. Durante a curta viagem de 400 anos-luz para chegar à Cabeça do Cavalo Azul, voaremos perto do complexo de nuvens coloridas Rho Ophiuchi, quase à mesma distância, ambos estão localizados na mesma região do céu a olho nu, em direção à constelação do Ophiuchus. Este é talvez o complexo nebuloso mais coloridos do espaço e uma das regiões de formações de estrelas mais próximas ao sistema solar. Estas nuvens inter-estelares de gás e poeiras contêm nebulosas de emissão (vermelhas) e nebulosas de reflexão (azul). As regiões a castanho escuro são causadas por grãos de poeira, nascidos em atmosferas estelares jovens, que efetivamente bloqueiam a luz emitida por detrás delas. O nosso mergulho profundo final revela a incrível nebulosa IC4592, mais conhecida pela sua forma distinta de uma Cabeça de Cavalo Azul. A nebulosa de reflexão azul é composta por partículas de poeira interestelar muito finas que refletem a luz visível de estrelas energéticas próximas, como Nu Scorpii, a estrela azul brilhante que marca o olho do Cavalo. Imerso na poeira acastanhada, é visível uma segunda nebulosa de reflexão chamada IC 4601 em torno de duas estrelas. A animação foi criada usando imagens reais da minha autoria, num total de 4 fotografias captadas com diferentes distâncias focais desde uma lente grande angular de paisagem até uma visão telescópica, para a aproximação final.

Milky Way All Sky and VR 360º Night Experience above Castro de Palheiros in Dark Sky® Vale do Tua
A full dome and 360º Virtual Reality scene features the path of Milky Way shining high in the night sky, above Castro de Palheiros, or Fragada of Castro, territory of Dark Sky® Vale do Tua – a new certified Starlight Tourist Destination. Located in the heart of Natural Park of Tua Valley, in the northern part of Portugal, “is an imposing quartzite ridge that was being carved and built by the people of Murça region, between the beginning of the third millennium BC up to the present”, according to the Interpretative Center of this region. In the background, Summer Triangle highlights the center of the image, with blueish star Vega near the top. At the upper left corner – in the beginning of the Milky Way – a bright elliptic and diffuse dot is the light coming from Andromeda Galaxy. In the opposite direction – lower horizon – shines the dusty core of Milky Way galaxy full emission nebulae featuring a reddish pink hues. On the left side of the all sky scene – lies also planets Jupiter, visible with its bright light near the quartzite rock. Below is available a Virtual Realities 360º of this scene. You can experience a full 7K resolution using your desktop, or smartphone with gyroscope. A great “in loco” experience can be achieved if you wear a VR glasses.

Milky Way Above the Medieval Castle of Juromenha
The image show a vertical panorama of the Milky Way as seen at the end of summer from inside the medieval castle of Juromenha in Dark Sky® Alqueva certified territory, in Portugal. The occupation of its site dates back to the Gallo-Celts and the Romans. Later occupied during the Muslim invasion of the Iberian Peninsula, at the time of the Christian Reconquest of the peninsula it remained for two centuries as a defence outpost of the important city of Badajoz, since the 10th century in the hands of the Caliphate of Cordoba. The village and medieval castle, were then conquered in 1167 by the troops of Portuguese King Afonso Henriques (1112-1185).

Milky Way and Andromeda Galaxy Shinning above Lagoa do Fogo in Azores
Captured literally in middle of Atlantic Ocean, in the island of São Miguel, Azores, Portugal, the image reveals a wide vertical panorama taken around midnight from Lagoa do Fogo (Lake of Fire).The blue lake is located at 575 meters above the sea level – it is about 2 km long and 1 km wide – filling the ground of an extinct crater, whose caldera was formed during an eruption in 1563. In the background, a winter sky shows the white light of Milky Way above the mountains while the faint diffuse oblong shape of Andromeda Galaxy is shinning high in the center. Bluish star cluster of Pleiades, is visible above the horizon while Summer Triangle is touching the upper edge of this panoramic scene.
PT: Captada literalmente em pleno Oceano Atlântico, na ilha de São Miguel, Açores, Portugal, a imagem revela um amplo panorama vertical captado por volta da meia-noite a partir da Lagoa do Fogo. Esta lagoa azul está localizada a 575 metros acima do nível do mar – tem cerca de 2 km de comprimento e 1 km de largura – enchendo o solo de uma cratera extinta, cuja caldeira foi formada durante uma erupção em 1563. Em pano de fundo, um céu de Inverno mostra a luz súbtil e esbranquiçada da Via Láctea erguendo-se acima das montanhas enquanto uma forma oblonga difusa proveniente da Galáxia de Andrómeda brilha ao alto no centro da imagem. O aglomerado azulado das Pleiades é visível acima do horizonte enquanto o Triângulo do Verão se desvanece no extremo superior deste cenário panorâmico.

Milky Way Shines in a VR 360º Starry Labeled Scene above São Domingos Mine
Captured on the wonderful century old mine of São Domingos, in Achada do Gamo, Dark Sky® Alqueva – Mértola, an all sky and 360º Virtual Reality scene features the arch of Milky Way shining high in the Sky. Summer Triangle highlights the center of the image, with blueish Vega near the top. At the upper left corner – in the beginning of the Milky Way – a bright elliptic and diffuse dot is the light coming from Andromeda Galaxy. In the opposite direction, close to the horizon shines the dusty core of the galaxy also reflected in a puddle of acid water. On the left side of the all sky scene – lies planets Saturn and Jupiter, visible with its bright light. Below is available two Virtual Realities 360º of this scene. One with the single image, and another with a labeled version where constellations and main deep sky objects visible are identified as a celestial planisphere. All the asterism lines and identifications were made manually by me. You can experience a full 7K resolution using your desktop, or smartphone with gyroscope. A great “in loco” experience can be achieved if you wear a VR glasses.

Milky Way Rising Over Alqueva Lake with a Bright Meteor Visible – Photo and Time Lapse
The still image and time lapse sequence shows the Arch of Milky Way rising above Alqueva Lake, in Dark Sky® Alqueva Reserve, Portugal. While the dusty core was moving to the south until reach the meredian, a bright and fast meteor was crossing the sky above it, being visible in the upper right corner. In the foreground, the calm water of Alqueva lake works as a perfect mirror, reflecting the brightest colorful stars of the spring sky. Below is possible to enjoy the video with sound on.
