Peacock Sleeping on a Tree Under a Colorful Lunar Corona Lit by a Super Blue Moon
The image shows a peacock sleeping in a tree in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, in a special night on 20th August 2024, when the second full Moon of the Month happened, and for being as well at perigee was also called a Super Blue Moon. The single shot, also shows the background sky with high clouds covering the unfocused moon, while revealing the iridescence of a colorful corona surrounding our natural satellite. I was surprised to see a tree full of peacocks, I din’t knew that they were sleeping on trees to protect themselves from predators. Even not being well visible on the image, the peacock had by its side one little offspring, which I only noticed by the end of my capture. NatGeo explains that the term “peacock” is commonly used to refer to birds of both sexes. Technically, only males are peacocks. Females are peahens, and together, they are called peafowl. Peacocks are large, colorful pheasants (typically blue and green) known for their iridescent tails.The two Asiatic species are the blue or Indian peafowl originally from the Indian subcontinent, and the green peafowl from Southeast Asia. According to wikipedia, the Ancient Greeks believed that the flesh of peafowl did not decay after death, so it became a symbol of immortality. In Hellenistic imagery, the Greek goddess Hera’s chariot was pulled by peacocks, birds not known to Greeks before the conquests of Alexander. Alexander’s tutor, Aristotle, refers to it as “the Persian bird”. When Alexander saw the birds in India, he was so amazed at their beauty that he threatened the severest penalties for any man who slew one. Claudius Aelianus writes that there were peacocks in India, larger than anywhere else. In Christianity, the peacock can also symbolise the cosmos if one interprets its tail with its many “eyes” as the vault of heaven dotted by the sun, moon, and stars. Due to the adoption by Augustine of the ancient idea that the peacock’s flesh did not decay, the bird was again associated with immortality.

Strawberry Full Moon Rising above the Golden Fields of Dark Sky® Alqueva
Sometimes all we need is an excuse to come outside and just being under the nature during nighttime while enjoying a wonderful moonrise. The image and video shows the June’s “strawberry” full moon rising in one of the Dark Sky® Alqueva golden fields, in Portugal. The background nature sound was recorded live in the field when I was shooting the time lapse, then included in the final video.

The Sun’s Aura – Solar Corona Revealed in All It’s Glory During Total Solar Eclipse 2024
Behind the Trip, from Portugal to Texas
Taking an high resolution HDR image like that represents an enormous amount of personal and professional efforts, as well as an incredible financial investment, and everything started many months before the Eclipse itself happened. Planning the trip to be on the right path, booking accommodation several months in advance, before prices went crazy, renting a car to be as much mobile as possible, and all of it without knowing if the weather will collaborate on the place we have choose to be for the special moment. Me and Apolónia, we travelled from Portugal to Pearsall, in Texas, as planned, but the forecast was indeed terrible almost in the entire US, or at least where the path was located. So after many hours driving from Dallas to Houston and then to Pearsall, with the rest of the week monitoring with several different models the evolution of the weather forecast, we have decided – even with a certain risk -that we must need to move back to north, again, to be more close to Oklahoma state. So on the day before the Eclipse, we had to drive back to Dallas during five or six hours and in the morning of the Eclipse, we did an extra two hours drive, to reach a small city called, Clarksville, in the northeast of Texas. At 10 AM the sky was still cloudy, and I only had 2 hours before the Eclipse starts, which means, to prepare my entire setup of 6 cameras with lens, tripods, mounts, filters, cables etc…. We found a nice green calm farm to setup everything. The owner kindly authorised us to stay with our car near by, thanks Ed. This was the most stressful time of our lives, without knowing until the very end, if we could make it, trying to focus and center the sun in between the clouds brought an extra difficulty to my task. Additionally, I only had 3 solar filters for 6 cameras. Fortunately, like a miracle, just 5 minutes before totality starts, the sky cleared up where the Sun was located and during the Maximum it was completely crystal clear, at least, for around 1min and 30 seconds, calm and windless until the end. It was just…Magical!!
Technical preparation and processing
My inspiration came from some of the most finest images I´ve seen so far, from pioneering Dr. Miloslav Druckmuller, and the incredible work of Nicolas Lefaudeux, as well as and the notable results achieved by my friend Petr Horalek. Just few months before the Eclipse I started going deep, researching and studying the processes involved in those kind of HDR Eclipse images. I red some of the papers by Dr. Miloslav, many other articles…and I knew it would be a very hard task. Specially some critical steps, as calibration and precise sub-pixel alignment in the linear stage, must be done using phase correlation, using correlated image structures to align them perfectly, which is done by non-available softwares, mainly developed by each of the authors, programmed and implemented themselves to apply the correct algorithm in a proper way. I don’t have access to a program with such capabilities and I didn’t wrote my own code – at least for now — so I had to find a different alternative for the critical steps. After many weeks testing and learning, I found the proper way to do it manually with pixel precision, using also calibration frames in the linear stage, but aligning and blending the seamless high dynamic range (HDR), free of artifact in the non-linear stage. There were helpful articles and tutorials along the way…from Fred Espenak, Alan’s Dyer (Books), Sean Walker (S&T article), and more recently by Bray Falls tutorial, but anyone was completely perfect on covering every aspects in case you plan to do both (Calibration, Aligning and HDR in Linear and non-linear stage). The image I’m presenting is the result of many hours of study and practice and a refined fusion of some of the techniques I’ve learned over the last years with some of you, so I’m thankful for that knowledge and want to show my deeply appreciation for that. I think that learning is the most beautiful thing, after…a Total Solar Eclipse :). With patience and knowledge, I tried to refine and improve some of the them, while integrating as part of my won developing workflow. It proved to be very efficient, as an example, after aligning all the brackets, and to achieve a perfect HDR merging while matching each exposure brightness levels, totally free of any artifact, I didn’t had to do, one single luminance mask during this non-linear stage, in order to get a well natural balanced light flow, ready for further enhancements of the corona details, such as removing the lowest spatial frequencies. It was incredible simple and it works like magic, I just need to check if also works so well on other different sets of Eclipse images, taken with different setups and exposures. Also important to say, specially nowadays, that this image, or part of it, was not AI generated, it’s of course, the result of a real hard amount of work captured and processed manually by myself. I’ve not even used during the processing stage, any AI fancy softwares, nor even to reduce noise, like Topaz. I used only PixInsight and Layering techniques in Photoshop.
The Sun’s Aura
The Corona is extremely hot and dynamic, being the outermost layer of the Sun’s atmosphere, it reveals intricate fine structures of delicate details distorted by the strong magnetic fields. Specially, close to the Solar maximum expected for 2025 (peak of 11 years cycle of activity), the plasma of the Sun’s corona features a lot of loops and wispy white streamers radiating into space. But due to an immense level of brightness it is only possible to see when the Moon is perfectly covering the Sun. Safe enough to enjoy with our naked-eyes, much more well prepared and efficient to comprise and accommodate a larger high dynamic range, than our cameras, which even nowadays can’t do it at once. This is why we need to cover around 14 stops in the dynamic range and probably even more would be best, but bracketing can help achieve this milestone.
And why is so special ? Because not even SOHO in space, from NASA, can watch the inner corona of the Sun in white light. It only can see the most extensive part of the outer corona, using a coronagraph, from two solar radii distant of the Sun’s centre.
Why Eclipse HDR is so Challenging
Photographing a Total Solar Eclipse, is probably to most advanced and complex task in all of astrophotography fields, not only from preparing and planning which requires a bit of Mat to find the correct set of exposures according to your gear combination, ISO, lens aperture, right place to be, right time to start etc, etc, as well as from executing it in a stressful short amount of time. But also very hard and difficult to process in a time consuming task. First, because the Sun, the Moon and the stars have all different motions across the sky, which are evident in long focal distances and long exposures. Images must be aligned not on the Moon’s disc, not on the stars, and not even on the prominences (as it only works in shorter exposures), so to reveal the corona in full glory, images must be aligned on the coronal structures which are very hard and tricky, as they are faint, subtle and lacking of contrast, and they keep moving too on a lower speed. Noticeable though over the course of all bracketing, but inevitably negligible, for the final fusion in order to naturally reduce the presence of noise. And probably the most difficult final achievement, is to keep as much as possible, everything looking natural without overcooking it. It is a delicate balance between, contrast, light flow, color and detail which I tried to keep in mind and respect until the very end. I hope I did it!
Equipment and Exposures
The High Resolution image was captured with a Sigma lens at 600mm at f6.3, and a Nikon D850 modified (Ha sensitive – not relevant for this type of TSE images) on a Vixen portable mount. I did more than 163 photos (bracketed exposures), but I’ve only selected 72 images (8 bracketed sequences of 9 shots each) to process, where the sky was crystal clear without any high cloud visible. The exposure time for each sequence bracketing was ranging from 1/125s, 1/60s, 1/30s, 1/15s, 1/8s, 1/4, 1/2s, 1s, 2s at ISO100, plus additional fast exposures of 1/4000 for C2 and C3 (Prominences and Baily’s Beads). 93GB of images were acquired just for this setup, being 1446 calibration frames such as flats, darks and bias (in a total of 65GB). Images used were captured during 1 minute and 28 seconds of the Maximum, during the 4 minutes and 19 seconds of Totality as seen from my location in Clarcksville, Texas.
I merged the images from contact C2 and C3 in a single final photo, to reveal the best of all prominences visible around the Sun’s limb. This allowed to show the solar prominences and their associated magnetic loops on the final HDR image.
Moon Earthshine
Normally well seen one or two days after the new moon, the Earthshine phenomenon was described and drawn for the first time by the great Leonardo Da Vinci about 500 years ago on his book Codex Leicester, Leonardo da Vinci explained the phenomenon known as Earthshine in the early 16th century, when he realised that both Earth and the Moon reflect sunlight at the same time. Light is reflected from the Earth to the Moon and then back to the Earth as Earthshine. During Totality the Moon is in front of the Sun and can be seen in a long exposure. Indeed, it’s the only moment when is possible to capture the full disc of the Moon during New Moon phase. I was gladly surprised with the level of detail that could be seen, after a stack of the 0,5s, 1s and 2s exposures of all 8 bracketing combined together, comprising a total amount of 28s. The level of detail was then enhancement using a Local Histogram Equalisation with a large scale. Again, is interesting to show that a stack aligned on the moon, reveals the trails of background stars as the moon is moving much more faster then sidereal, and solar motion. Below: The image on the left, shows the natural Moon’s disc after the 28s stack, and before any further detail enhancement. Startrails are shown on the right image as the result of the stack.
Background stars up to 10.8 mag
The stack of the long exposures aligned on the stars, comprises a total amount of 28 seconds too, and can reveal stars down to magnitude 10.8. Interesting to note that the brightest star visible close to the left side of the Moon, – landscape version or upper in the portrait one – is indeed a variable double star in Pisces named: Zeta Piscium (86 Psc).
Coronal motion on finest structures
Loops in the inner corona are normally more slow and tend to not reveal obvious motion in such short amount of time (88 seconds), but streamers and small scale features seems to reveals some noticeable movement in the background. Some of the most interested features that my eyes could caught are highlighted with arrows at the lower left corner, showing what seems to be a displacement of a small scale structure. Besides the evident Moon’s motion, is also possible to notice some subtle radial motion on large scale features, visible in the background. Even not being as precise as sub-pixel phase correlation algorithm, the animation can also attest the high accuracy of manual alignment. Images used for this animation were acquired during 1 minute and 28 seconds of the Maximum during Totality in between 13h45m46s and13h47m14s Local time (-6 UT). Each successive 9 exposures set of images was aligned and processed independently to get 8 successive final composites of the solar corona. Then, the lowest spatial frequencies was removed and all composites were animated as a final Gif at a speed of 0,05 seconds each. Captured from Clarcksville, Texas, US, during Totality on April 8, 2024 with a 600mm lens f/6.3 on a Nikon D850. Note – you might feel seek if you focus your attention for a long period of time on the same spot. Make a few seconds pause, and then look back.

Sometimes all we need is an excuse to come outside and just being under the nature during nighttime while enjoying a wonderful super moonrise. Supermoons happen when a full moon approximately coincides with the moon’s perigee, or a point in its orbit at which it is closest to Earth. This makes the moon appear larger and brighter than usual. The 1st August 2023 was on of these moments. The single shot was captured in the beautiful landscape of Dark Sky® Alqueva territory, in Portugal.

Earth Shadow – The Beauty of a Total Lunar Eclipse in Motion
A video time lapse in 4K shows what is the deepest feeling of experiencing the incredible moment when the moon passes through the Earth’s shadow, giving the natural satellite a blood-red hue during a total lunar eclipse. The stars around the moon are again visible as the light of the moon drops drastically, giving rise to a unique moment of seeing the mesmerising presence of the Milky Way but at the same time, the shinning moon reflecting a low reddish light for being immersed inside the Umbra of the Earth shadow. The movie also intend to reveal the emotional feeling and ambience which surround us during this celestial event, when we are under the real darkness of a pristine starry sky like Mértola, in Dark Sky® Alqueva territory, Portugal. All the images were captured during the Total Lunar Eclipse of 16th May, 2022. For being near the closest point to our planet Earth, this Moon was also called a “Super Blood Moon”. According to timeanddate.com next Lunar Eclipse it will happen in 2023, on 5-6 May and will be a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse visible in Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Ocean and Antarctica. Close to the end of the year, on 28-29 October 2023, it wil be visible a Partial Lunar Eclipse, seen from Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, North America, Much of South America, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Arctic, Antarctica.

Last Full Moon of the Year Featuring a Colorful Corona During a Close Encounter with Mars
The image shows the last Full Moon of the year captured in a double exposure and “immersed” in a layer of clouds. The colourful hue that surrounds the moon, is a lunar corona formed while bright moonlight is diffracted by water droplets in thin clouds, drifting in front of the lunar disk. Mars is also visible as a little yellow-orange dot that lies in the blue boundary of the orange ring from corona circular shape. Located at a few degrees of the Moon for being captured at 18° latitude, from North America and Europe was possible to watch the complete occultation of the planet by the Moon’s disc.

As tonalidades coloridas que circundam a lua, são provocadas por uma corona lunar, que se forma enquanto o brilho da lua é difractado por gotículas de água em nuvens finas, provocando a iridescência que lhe confere a cor, enquanto flutuam assim na frente do disco lunar. Marte também é visível como um pequeno ponto amarelo-laranja que fica no limite do anel azul que compõe a corona. Situado a poucos graus da Lua por ter sido captado a 18° de latitude, na América do Norte e Europa, foi possível observar a ocultação do planeta pelo disco lunar.

Waning Gibbous Moon Rising like a Torch of Hope above the Golf of Oman

In the other side of the Sea, close to the horizon where the red-blood moon is visible, there is Iran, a beautiful country full of good and talented people which is now suffering while trying to fight for their freedom. Colorful Scenes Before and After the New Moon Reveals a Lunar Earthshine at Dawn and Dusk
Captured one day before the New Moon and the last Partial Solar Eclipse of the year, against the colorful background in the morning twilight of Antalya, Turkey, the image reveals not only a smiling Waning Crescent Moon but also the rare view of planet Mercury, the Inner planet more close to the Sun and by that reason, very difficult to see and spot in the eastern sky. Looking carefully to the end of the pier where is the last lounge roof, we can find the orange bright dot. Now on the right image, captured with the same 200mm lens and almost from the same location on a pier in the beach, reveals the scene while looking to the opposite direction of the sky, this time facing to west just two days after the new moon and 30 minutes after the sunset. The Earthshine is again visible, but the smile has slightly changed due to the Moon position regarding the Sun. Described and drawn for the first time by Leonardo Da Vinci about 500 years ago on his book Codex Leicester, Leonardo da Vinci explained the phenomenon known as Earthshine in the early 16th century, when he realised that both Earth and the Moon reflect sunlight at the same time. Light is reflected from the Earth to the Moon and back to the Earth as earthshine.The image shows a sequence of shots in time lapse mode, while the Moon Earthshine of last October was setting above Bey mountains and close to Mediterranean Sea.
PT: Captada um dia antes da Lua Nova e do último Eclipse Solar Parcial do ano, contra o fundo colorido do crepúsculo matinal de Antalya, na Turquia, a imagem revela não apenas uma Lua Minguante sorridente, mas também a rara visão do planeta Mercúrio, o Planeta interior mais próximo do Sol e por isso, muito difícil de ver e localizar no céu oriental. Olhando atentamente para o final do cais onde fica o último telhado da zona lounge, podemos encontrar um ponto laranja brilhante. Já na imagem à direita, captada com a mesma lente de 200mm e quase do mesmo local do pontão na praia, revela o cenário na direção oposta do céu, desta vez voltado para oeste apenas dois dias após a lua nova e 30 minutos após o pôr do sol. O Earthshine é novamente visível, mas o sorriso mudou ligeiramente devido à posição da Lua em relação ao Sol. Descrito e desenhado pela primeira vez por Leonardo Da Vinci há cerca de 500 anos em seu livro Codex Leicester, Leonardo da Vinci explicou o fenómeno conhecido como Earthshine no início do século XVI, quando percebeu que tanto a Terra quanto a Lua refletem a luz solar ao mesmo tempo. A luz é refletida da Terra para a Lua e de volta para a Terra como Earthshine. A imagem mostra ainda uma sequência fotográfica em modo time lapse, enquanto o Earthshine lunar de Outubro se deitava acima das montanhas Bey e perto do Mar Mediterrâneo.

A night cityscape view shows the October’s full moon, also knwon as the Hunter’s Moon, visible in a twilight sequence while rising and pairing along with planet Jupiter above the skyline of London city, in UK, one of the most busy cities in the world.

The Full Hunter’s Moon Pairing with Jupiter above the Skyline of London City
A night cityscape view shows the October’s full moon, also knwon as the Hunter’s Moon, while rising and pairing along with planet Jupiter above the skyline of London city, in UK, one of the most busy cities in the world. The result is a panoramic of single shots taken at 50mm in the night before the Full Moon, on Saturday 8. There was a little thin layer of high clouds in the sky, which helped for the natural look of an HDR technique, used regarding the moon disc region itself, which is the result of 3 different exposures combined..

Total Lunar Eclipse with a Super Red Moon Immersed in a Colorful Starfield
The image shows a close-up view of a red dark Moon immersed in a colorful field of stars, taken with a telephoto lens during the Total Lunar Eclipse of 2022, on 16th May, as seen from Mina de São Domingos in Dark Sky® Alqueva Mértola, Portugal. During a lunar eclipse, the moon passes through Earth’s shadow, giving the natural satellite a blood-red hue. For being near the closest point to our planet Earth, this Moon was also called a “Super Blood Moon”. Below is also possible to enjoy, a starless version, less distractive.

April Full Moon Rising Like an Easter Egg above Monsaraz Castle
The last Full moon was literally an Easter moon. Why, because it was rising like an egg. Even looking round at a first sight, take a look below on the left portrait, which shows exactly this same picture but rotated to a vertical position. It’s like an optical illusion. In fact Dr. Les Cowley from Atmospheric Optics, explains why a spherical object appears flattened near the horizon: “Rays from the setting sun are refracted by the atmosphere and make it appear higher in the sky. The lower limb is lifted more than the top limb, making its image oval.” The same could happen with the moon when its light is crossing different layers at different pressures and temperatures. The light is bent and distorts the image forming the Easter Egg shape. The single image captured with a 600mm at a distance of 8,2 km, shows the moon rising above Monsaraz Castle in Dark Sky® Alqueva Reserve, Portugal. The image on the right, was captured a few minutes later at a focal of 400mm (200mm + 2x extender) when the moon was a little bit higher.

Mesmo parecendo redonda à primeira vista, a imagem em modo retrato que é possível ver em baixo à esquerda, mostra exatamente esta mesma fotografia, mas na posição vertical. Parece uma incrível ilusão óptica. Na verdade, Dr. Les Cowley, especialista do Atmospheric Optics, explica por que um objecto esférico parece achatado perto do horizonte: “Os raios do sol poente são refractados pela atmosfera e fazem com que este pareça mais alto no céu. O limbo inferior é eleva-se mais do que o limbo superior, tornando a sua imagem oval.” O mesmo pode acontecer com a lua quando a sua luz atravessa diferentes camadas da atmosfera, a diferentes pressões e temperaturas. A luz é “dobrada” e distorce a imagem apresentando o formato de “ovo de Páscoa”. A imagem é resultado de um disparo único captado com uma teleobjectiva de 600mm à distância de 8,2 km, e revela o nascimento da Lua Cheia sobre o Castelo de Monsaraz na Reserva Dark Sky® Alqueva, em Portugal. A imagem da direita, captada alguns minutos mais tarde com outra objectiva de 200mm + duplicador (2x), revela um enquadramento similar com a Lua mais elevada no céu.

Moonrise Crossing an Inversion Layer Showing the Rare Lunar Red Flash
The image and video time lapse shows the full moonrise of last June 24, 2021, vividly orange in color above a hill made by rocky wastes from an extraction of marble, in Borba. In the foreground, blurred greenish hues belongs to a vineyard which is out of focus in the frame for being not faraway from my 600mm telephoto lens. Above the horizon, a sequence of shots shows the moon rising while seems to immerse into a layer of strong temperature inversion, where warm air is above colder air, creating the right conditions to show a rare phenomenon known as lunar “red flash”. On the second moon of the still photo sequence, is visible a red flash below the disc, appearing detach from the main body itself. Expert Les Cowley explains on his Atmospheric Optics website, “when crossing the layers, light rays bend so that they are reflected up and down. This phenomenon is the result of mirages and color separation. We usually see a green flash when the Sun or Moon dips down into the inversion.The near horizon moon has an upper green rim (green because much blue light is scattered away) and a lower red rim. A mirage is needed to magnify these into a green or red flash. The “Etruscan Vase” or “Omega mirage” is formed by refraction across the temperature/density gradients of warm air beneath cooler.” .
PT: A imagem e vídeo time lapse, revelam o nascer da lua cheia no passado dia 24 de Junho de 2021, com uma cor vívida laranja, acima de uma colina formada por resíduos rochosos de uma extração de mármore, em Borba. No primeiro plano, os tons esverdeados pertencem a uma vinha que está desfocado no enquadramento por não estar muito longe da minha teleobjetiva de 600 mm. Acima do horizonte, uma sequência de fotos mostra a lua nascendo enquanto parece imergir de uma camada com uma forte inversão de temperatura, onde o ar quente está acima do ar mais frio, criando as condições certas para mostrar um fenómeno raro, conhecido como “flash vermelho” lunar. Na segunda lua da sequência fotográfica estática, é visível um pequeno “flash” vermelho alongado logo abaixo do limbo, que se parece desprender do próprio disco lunar. O especialista britânico Les Cowley explica no seu site Atmospheric Optics, “ao cruzar as camadas, os raios de luz curvam-se de modo que são refletidos para cima e para baixo. Este fenómeno é o resultado de miragens e separação de cores. Normalmente vemos um flash verde quando o Sol ou a Lua mergulha na inversão. A lua próxima do horizonte, tem uma borda verde superior (verde porque muita da luz azul é espalhada) e uma borda vermelha inferior. Uma miragem é no entanto necessária para ampliar actuante como uma lente gigante, tornando assim visível o flash verde ou vermelho. O “Etruscan Vase” ou “Miragem Omega” é formado pela refração através dos gradientes de temperatura – densidade do ar quente abaixo do mais frio. “.

Super Flower Full Moon of May in a Golden Moonrise
People in Australia, parts of the western US, western South America, or in South-East Asia, will enjoy tonight a Super Flower Full Moon totally eclipsed and turn a shade of red for about 14 minutes during this total lunar eclipse. Unfortunatly, we located in Europe will not be able this time to appreciate a TLE, although, the event of moonrise will be spectaular anyway, as tonight will be Super a Fullmoon. Supermoons happen when a full moon approximately coincides with the moon’s perigee, or a point in its orbit at which it is closest to Earth. The single image captured yesterday night, shows a golden moonrise above a hill full of trees in Telheiro, at Dark Sky® Alqueva, Portugal. The Full Moon of May is known as the Flower Moon to signify the flowers that bloom during this month.

ISS Lunar Transit over a Waxing Gibbous Moon
The image shows a sequence of the ISS – International Space Station – crossing the moon’s disc during the twilight over Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory in Cumeada region, Reguengos, Portugal, on March 23, 2021 at UT 17h43m. In the background, a detailed Waxing Gibbous Moon features a surface 70% directly illuminated by the Sun and spread by contrasted craters. The path which comprises 29 frames with the ISS visible, seems to cross very close to the well known Tycho crater, with a diameter of 86km. Carrying on board astronauts, the large artificial satellite orbiting our planet with a width of 108.5 meters seems although very small when compared with the moon’s disc with an angular size of 31.2′. Indeed, the moon was 35.7 times larger than the ISS during this particular passage. Although, larger structures and the main solar panels are well possible to distinguish in the image. The angular size of the ISS was 52.42″ arc seconds at a distance of 526,67 km and a speed of 7,39km/s, it has just crossed the moon in a blink of an eye during 0.69s. International Space Station (ISS) completes an entire orbit around Earth each 90 minutes, but these events are not happening so often. To capture this scene, I´ve used a ZWO ASI178MC planetary camera in full resolution at 21 frames per second, with a telescope Takahashi FSQ-106ED + Extender-Q 1.6x (840mm) on a mount EM-200.

Em pano de fundo, uma lua detalhada apresenta uma superfície 70% iluminada directamente pelo sol e repleta de crateras contrastantes. A linha que descreve a passagem da ISS, e que compreende 29 fotografias captadas em modo sequencial, passa próximo da conhecida cratera Tycho, com um diâmetro de 86km. Transportando a bordo astronautas em permanência, o maior satélite artificial a orbitar o nosso planeta Terra, tem uma largura de 108,5 metros, embora pareça muito pequeno quando comparado com disco lunar com um tamanho angular de 31,2′ (minutos de arco). Na verdade, a lua encontrava-se 35,7 vezes maior do que a ISS durante esta passagem em particular. Porém, as maiores estruturas e os painéis solares principais são bem possíveis de distinguir na imagem. Com o tamanho angular de 52,42″ (segundos de arco), a ISS passou a uma distância de 526,67 km e uma velocidade de 7,39 km/s, cruzando a lua num piscar de olhos, durante cerca de 0,69 segundos. A Estação Espacial Internacional (ISS) completa uma órbita inteira ao redor da Terra a cada 90 minutos, mas eventos como este não acontecem com tanta frequência. Para captar esta imagem, usei uma c^mara planetário ZWO ASI178MC na máxima resolução e a 21 frames por segundo, com um telescópio Takahashi FSQ-106ED + Extender-Q 1.6x (840mm) numa montagem EM-200.

Like Flying over Plato Crater and Vallis Alpes Lunar Valley
Like if we were making an orbital flight over the moon, the image captured on March 23, 2021 from Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory, in Cumeada village, Portugal, on a very steady night, shows in close-up a high-resolution sharp view of Plato and Vallis Alpes. Located on the northeastern shore of the Mare Imbrium, at the western extremity of the Montes Alpes mountain range. Plato is a lava-filled lunar impact crater with an age of around 3.84 billion years, featuring a 100,7km in diameter has an irregular rim with 2-km-tall jagged peaks that project prominent shadows across the crater floor when the Sun is at a low angle. Sections of the inner wall display signs of past slumping, most notably a large triangular slide along the western side. The rim of Plato is circular, but from the Earth it appears oval due to foreshortening. The flat floor of Plato has a relatively low albedo, making it appear dark in comparison to the surrounding rugged terrain. The floor is free of significant impact craters and lacks a central peak. However, there are a few small craterlets scattered across the floor. East of the crater, among the Montes Alpes, are several rilles collectively named the Rimae Plato. Near the lower left corner, is located Vallis Alpes, an incredible lunar valley featuring that bisects the Montes Alpes range. It extends 166 km from the Mare Imbrium basin. The valley is narrow at both ends and widens to a maximum width of about 10 km along the middle stretch. The valley floor is a flat, lava-flooded surface that is bisected by a slender, broken, cleft-like rille. The sides of the valley rise from the floor to the surrounding highland terrain, a blocky, irregular surface.

A lunar Scene Shows a Close-up Sharp View of Copernicus Crater
Captured on March 23, 2021 from Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory, in Cumeada village, Portugal, on a very steady night, the close-up view shows a high-resolution sharp view of Copernicus crater. Visible slightly northwest of the center of the Moon’s Earth-facing hemisphere, Copernicus is an impact crater located on the eastern Oceanus Procellarum. With a diameter of 96,1km and a depth of 3.8 km, it may have been created by debris from the breakup of the parent body of asteroid 495 Eulalia, around 800 million years ago. The circular rim has a discernible hexagonal form, with a terraced inner wall and a 30 km wide, sloping rampart that descends nearly a kilometer to the surrounding mare. There are three distinct terraces visible, and arc-shaped landslides due to slumping of the inner wall as the crater debris subsided. Most likely due to its recent formation, the crater floor has not been flooded by lava. The terrain along the bottom is hilly in the upper part, while the other half is relatively smooth. The central peaks separated from each other by valleys, consist of three isolated mountainous rises climbing as high as 1.2 km above the floor. The crater rays spread as far as 800 kilometers across the surrounding mare, overlying rays from the craters Aristarchus and Kepler. Visível ligeiramente a noroeste do centro do hemisfério da Lua que está voltado para a Terra, Copernicus é uma cratera de impacto localizada ana região Este do Oceanus Procellarum. Com um diâmetro de 96,1 km e uma profundidade de 3,8 km, pode ter sido criada por destroços do asteróide 495 Eulália, há cerca de 800 milhões de anos atrás. As paredes externas circulares têm uma forma hexagonal perceptível, com uma parede interna em forma de terraço e uma muralha inclinada de 30 km de largura que desce quase um quilômetro até o mar circundante. Existem três terraços distintos visíveis e deslizamentos de terra em forma de arco devido à queda da parede interna à medida que os detritos da cratera diminuíram. Muito provavelmente, devido à sua formação recente, o fundo da cratera não foi inundado por lava. Clavius and Moretus in a Sharp Lunarscape Scene
Like if we were making an orbital flight over the moon, the image captured on March 23, 2021 from Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory, in Cumeada village, Portugal, on a very steady night, shows a high-resolution sharp view of Clavius along with Moretus craters framed in the same scene. Being Clavius one of the largest and older formations on the lunar surface, features a diameter of 230.8Km and a Depth of 3.5 km, and it was formed during the Nectarian period. The convex plain floor was flooded with lava at about 4 billion years ago, it has a low outer wall comparing to its size, marked by some small and large crater impacts, like the detailed Rutherfurd visible in the upper part of the crater wall with a diameter of 47,4km and depth of 2,5km, as well as Porter – lower part of the crater wall near the lower egde of the image – with 51,3km in diameter. Last October 2020, NASA has announced and confirmed the existence of a molecular water near Clavius. But this lunarscape scene also shows another very interesting crater, Moretus – upper right corner – with a diameter of 114km. Due to the location near the lunar limb, the crater appears oblong because of foreshortening. The rim of the crater has a wide, terraced inner wall, and a complex outer rampart. The floor has been partly resurfaced and is relatively flat. In the middle is a central mountain formation that rises about 2.1 kilometers above the surrounding floor.

Mas esta paisagem lunar também mostra outra cratera muito interessante, Moretus, com um diâmetro de 114 km. Devido à localização próxima ao limbo lunar, a cratera parece oblonga devido à perspectiva. O extremo da cratera tem uma parede interna ampla e em terraço, assim como uma muralha externa complexa. O piso foi parcialmente recapeado e é relativamente plano. No meio está uma formação montanhosa central que se eleva a cerca de 2,1 quilémetros acima do solo circundante.

ISS Crossing a Moon Full of Craters – Photo and Video
The image and video sequence shows the ISS – International Space Station – crossing the crescent moon disc over Borba region, in Alentejo, Portugal, on 18th January 2021 at UT 19h14m41s. In the background, a detailed moon features a surface 30% directly illuminated by the sun and spread by contrasted craters. Carrying on board 7 astronauts from the Expedition 64, the large artificial satellite orbiting our planet with a width of 108.5 meters seems although very small when compared with the moon´s disc with an angular size of 31.2′. Indeed, the moon was 42.3 times larger than the ISS during this particular passage. Although, larger structures and the main solar panels are well possible to distinguish in the image. The angular size of the ISS was 43.10″ arc seconds at a distance of 644 km and a speed of 7,38km/s, it has just crossed the moon in a blink of an eye during 1.10s. International Space Station (ISS) completes an entire orbit around Earth each 90 minutes, but these events are not happening so often. Da Vinci Glow Revealed in a High Dynamic Range of a Crescent Moon
Featured as Nasa´s APOD – Astronomy Picture of the Day image shows an High Dynamic Range photo of a Crescent Moon, showing in a detailed way the Da Vinci Glow, as well as revealing the bright side of the Moon full of craters with its disk 22,6% directly illuminated by the Sun. Described and drawn for the first time by the great Leonardo Da Vinci about 500 years ago on his book Codex Leicester, Leonardo da Vinci explained the phenomenon known as Earthshine in the early 16th century, when he realised that both Earth and the Moon reflect sunlight at the same time. Light is reflected from the Earth to the Moon and back to the Earth as earthshine. On the bright side is possible to see in the upper part, craters like Hercules and Atlas, while a bit below the lunar Terminator (line dividing light and shadow) is crossing the large Posidonius crater which also marks in the beginning of Mar Tranquilitatis, the place where the last Apollo mission (17) as landed. Below are also visible Mare Crisium, Mare Fecunditatis and Mare Nectaris.

No lado mais brilhante, é ainda possível distinguir na zona superior, crateras como Hércules e Atlas, enquanto um pouco abaixo o Terminador lunar (linha que divide luz e sombra) cruza a grande cratera Posidonius, que também marca no início do Mar Tranquilitatis, a local onde aterrou a última missão da Apollo (17). Abaixo, são também visíveis os Mare Crisium, Mare Fecunditatis e Mare Nectaris.

Reddish “Eclipsed” Full Moon Rising above Spain
A countryside scene captured from Juromenha inside Dark Sky® Alqueva territory and facing to Spain, shows a reddish moonrise over the hills of Spanish horizon on 5 June 2020. Even being partially eclipsed due to a Penumbral lunar eclipse – happening when the Moon passes through Earth’s faint outer shadow – during the nautical twilight is difficult to notice this faint shadow on the moon´s disk, although, a second photo shows a related phenomenon visible almost every day known as the Earth’s shadow. This shadow is visible in the opposite half of the sky to the sunset or sunrise, and is seen right above the horizon as a dark blue band. Immediately above, where the evening air is still lit, glows a pink band called the anti-twilight arch, also known as “Belt of Venus”, and is caused by backscattering of refracted sunlight due to fine dust particles high in the atmosphere..
PT: Um cenário rural captado a partir de Juromenha dentro do território Dark Sky® Alqueva e voltado para Espanha, revela um nascer de uma lua cheia avermelhado sobre as colinas do horizonte espanhol em 5 de junho de 2020. Já nascendo parcialmente eclipsada devido a um eclipse lunar Penumbral – que ocorre quando a Lua atravessa a fraca sombra externa da Terra – durante o crepúsculo náutico é difícil perceber essa sombra fraca projectada no disco da lua, no entanto, um fenémeno relacionado pode ser visível quase todos os dias. Conhecido como “Earth Shadow” ou sombra da Terra. Essa sombra é visível na metade do céu oposta ao pôr do sol, ou ao nascer do sol. É visível logo acima do horizonte como uma faixa azul escura. Imediatamente acima, onde o ar da tarde ainda está iluminado, brilha uma faixa rosa chamada arco anti-crepuscular, também conhecido como “Cinturão de Vénus”, e é causada pelo retroespalhamento da luz solar refractada devido a finas partículas de poeira na atmosfera!

Little Owls Breeding Against a Golden Supermoon
Captured during the full moon of March – called the Worm Moon – was indeed the first supermoon of the year 2020. Despite this interesting moment, which normally happens when the full moon coincides with its perigee, the single image reveals an out of focus moonrise in the background sky, while in the foreground two little Owls are visible in the branches of a naked tree during the twilight. The little Owl (Athene noctua) is a small nocturnal bird which inhabiting the temperate and warmer regions of Europe, being one of the nocturnal bird species more common to watch in Mértola, Dark Sky® Alqueva territory, Portugal. This Owls becomes more vocal at night as the breeding season approaches in late spring, and a pair may call in duet. During an assignment to photograph nocturnal birds in this territory and accompanied by a specialist guide Helder Cardoso (from Birds & Nature Tours), I had the unique and mesmerising chance to capture the real moment when they start to mate with the male on top of the female, while the wings were in motion and against a golden moonrise. In some other shots, we also can enjoy one little Owl flying while the other was standing in the top of the tree. The little Owl is also associated with the Greek goddess Athena and the Roman goddess Minerva, representing wisdom and knowledge. A little Owl with an olive branch appears on a Greek tetradrachm coin from 500 BC. I also did a short real time vídeo (not a timelapse) with the moon slowing moving in the background sky, while the silhouette of two Owls are visible in the branches.
PT: Captada durante a lua cheia de março – apelidada de Worm Moon – foi a primeira superlua do ano 2020. Apesar desse momento interessante, que normalmente acontece quando a lua cheia coincide com o perigeu, a imagem resultante de um disparo único, revela o nascer de uma lua desfocada em pano de fundo, enquanto as atenções recaem no primeiro plano onde dois mochos-galegos são visíveis nos galhos de uma árvore despida, durante o crepúsculo náutico. O mocho-galego (Athene noctua) é a ave de rapina nocturna mais fácil de observar e que habita as regiões temperadas e quentes da Europa, sendo uma das espécies de aves noturnas mais comuns em Mértola, no território do Dark Sky® Alqueva, Portugal. Este pequenos mochos tornam-se mais vocais à noite, à medida que a estação de reprodução se aproxima, no final da primavera, e um par pode vocalizar em dueto. Em missão fotográfica num trabalho para captar as aves noturnas mais comuns deste território e acompanhado pelo guia especializado Helder Cardoso (Birds & Nature Tours), tive a chance única e fascinante de registar o momento real em que eles começaram a acasalar com o macho por cima da fêmea, enquanto as asas estavam em movimento e contra um nascer de uma Lua Cheia dourada. Ficaram ainda registados outros momentos distintos desta noite, com um mocho-galego em pleno voo enquanto a sua cara metade esperava pacientemente no topo da árvore. O mocho também está associada à deusa grega Atena e à deusa romana Minerva, representando sabedoria e conhecimento. Uma pequeno mocho com um ramo de oliveira está representado numa moeda grega de Tetradrachm (500 aC). Por fim, é ainda possível ver um pequeno vídeo em tempo real (não um timelapse) com a lua se movendo lentamente em pano de fundo, enquanto a silhueta de dois mochos-galegos é visível nos galhos de uma árvore.

In the Darkness of Space Shines a Waxing Gibbous Moon Featuring a Bright Surface Full of Craters
When the Moon in its orbital movement around Earth is more than 50,1 % illuminated the by sunlight, starts the intermediate phase called Waxing Gibbous Moon. Waxing means that it is getting bigger and bigger while Gibbous is related to the shape, which is less than the full circle of the Moon when it is Full, but larger than the semicircle shape of the Moon when it is at Third Quarter. The image above captured on April 3, 2020, shows a beautiful moon immersed in the darkness of empty space. At this time, 75% of its disk was directly illuminated by the sunlight while featuring a bright surface spread with craters of all sizes, physical memories from lunar impacts of ancient times. Copernicus, a crater with 96,1km in diameter, can be seen at the low left center located in the flat dark area of Mare Insularum. In the opposite busy side – at the low right area – white stripes are radiating across the southern lunar highlands, coming from the 85 kilometre wide crater Tycho. This stacked result comprises 21 single shots captured from Cumeada Observatory in Dark Sky® Alqueva Reserve, which also can show that the moon is more then a grey body as it is normally perceived by our human eye, revealing a subtle coloration of a grey-blueish tint, regarding its chemical constitution.
PT: Quando a Lua em seu movimento orbital ao redor da Terra se encontra mais que 50,1% iluminada pela luz do sol, inicia-se a fase intermédia chamada Waxing Gibbous Moon ou Lua Crescente Gibosa. Waxing significa que está a ficar cada vez maior, enquanto Gibbous está relacionado com a forma que apresenta, que é menor que o círculo completo da Lua quando está Cheia, mas maior que a forma semicircular da Lua quando está no Quarto Crescente. A imagem acima captada em 3 de Abril de 2020, revela uma lua imersa na escuridão do espaço vazio. Nesse momento, 75% de seu disco estava directamente iluminado pela luz solar, apresentando uma superfície brilhante repleta de crateras de todos os tamanhos, memórias físicas dos impactos lunares dos tempos remotos. Copernicus, uma cratera com 96,1 km de diâmetro, pode ser vista no centro esquerdo inferior, localizada na área plana e escura do Mare Insularum. No lado oposto mais salpicado de crateras – na área inferior direita – faixas esbranquiçadas espalham-se de forma raiada pelas terras altas lunares do sul, vindas da cratera Tycho, com 85 quilómetros de diâmetro. A imagem é o resultado de um stack que compreende 21 fotos individuais captadas a partir do Observatório da Cumeada, Sede Oficial do Dark Sky® Alqueva, e que mostra assim que a lua é mais do que um corpo cinzento, como é normalmente percebido pelo olho humano, revelando uma sutil coloração de um matiz cinza-azulado, relacionado com a sua constituição química.

Winter Lunar Earthshine Aligned with Planet Saturn
The image reveals an Earthshine of a Crescent Moon captured at the end of nautical twilight, when the Moon was in conjuction with planet Saturn. Only separated by 3º, the planet is visible as a yellowish star on the right edge of the image, above a hill with trees from fluvial beach of Amieira, in Dark Sky® Alqueva territory, Portugal.

A Golden Beaver Moon Rises above the Fields of Dark Sky® Alqueva
The image features a golden Full Moon rising in the landscape of Alandroal, in Dark Sky® Alqueva, with a single shot captured after the end of Mercury transit in front of the Sun, just few hours before the Moon is being officially Full. The fields of Alandroal in Alentejo, are full of Olive, Cork and Holm Oak trees, as well as sloping terrains providing beutiful scenarios for this kind of compositions. The Full Moon of November, is also known as the Beaver Moon. According to timeandate scource, “the Full Moon for November is named after beavers because this is the time they become particularly active building their winter dams in preparation for the cold season. The beaver is mainly nocturnal, so they keep working under the light of the Full Moon”.
PT: A imagem revela uma Lua cheia dourada a nascer acima da característica paisagem alentejana do Alandroal, no Dark Sky® Alqueva, captada com um disparo único após o final do trânsito de Mercúrio em frente ao Sol, a poucas horas da Lua estar oficialmente cheia. Os campos do Alandroal estão repletos de oliveiras, sobreiros e azinheiras, e desníveis de terreno que proporcionam cenários perfeitos para este tipo de composições. A Lua Cheia de Novembro, também é conhecida como a Lua do Castor. De acordo com a fonte timeandate, “a Lua Cheia de Novembro tem o nome de “castores”, porque é o momento em que eles se tornam particularmente activos na construção de suas represas de inverno em preparação para a estação fria. O castor é principalmente noturno, daí continuar trabalhando sob a luz fraca da Lua cheia”.
Drone Footage of the Total Solar Eclipse 2019 from Chile
One of the most beautiful things about viewing and photographing a total solar eclipse, is the light from the inner corona which reveals fine structures and curved lines by the strong magnetic fields, as well as the faint white light that extends far out into space, known as the Sun´s outer corona. On 2nd July, 2019, thousands of people located in some parts of Chile and Argentina had the incredible opportunity to witness the unique and unforgettable moment when the Moon itself completely blocks the sun´s disc showing also some prominences visible around the limb and a phenomenon known as the Moon Earthshine, even not being visible with our naked eyes during an eclipse due to the huge difference of light, is the reflected light from our planet Earth that illuminates with a faint light, the moon´s dark disc and it can be revealed during a photographic long exposure. The final video is the result of a drone footage captured during totality and mixed with some still shots taken with different exposures over the course of 2 minutes and combined together to reveal a dramatic high dynamic range. The sequence was captured in Lambert, 30km northeast of La Serena, Chile, using a Nikon D850 with a 600mm telephoto lens for still photos, with a Star Adventure portable mount and a drone Mavik Pro I for the aerial footage.

A 2 de Julho de 2019, milhares de pessoas localizadas em algumas partes do Chile e da Argentina, tiveram a incrível oportunidade de testemunhar o momento único e inesquecível em que a própria Lua bloqueia completamente o disco solar, revelando também algumas proeminências visíveis ao redor do limbo e um fenómeno conhecido como Moon Earthshine, que mesmo não sendo visível a olho nu durante um eclipse devido à enorme diferença de luz, é a luz refletida do nosso prórpio planeta Terra que ilumina com uma luz ténue, o disco escurecido da lua, que se torna assim visível durante uma longa exposição fotográfica. O vídeo final é o resultado de uma filmagem de drone captada durante a totalidade e misturada com algumas fotos tiradas com diferentes exposições ao longo de 2 minutos e combinadas com o intuito de revelar uma dramática gama dinâmica. A Lunar Scene to Comemorate 50 years of Moon Landing
On this day 20 July, but 50 years ago and on board of Apollo 11 mission, two Nasa Astronauts were making “a small step for man, but a giant leap for mankind”. After successfully landing, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were prepared to make the first walk ever, on the surface of “another world”, the Moon. This lunar panoramic landscape scene, could be the view from a spaceship flying over the moon, although, it was captured here on Earth from inside the Official Observatory of Dark Sky Alqueva, in Cumeada, Portugal. Showing a lot of interesting features from the south pole of the moon, we can highlight at the right center of the photo, Longomontanus crater with 145.5km and above it, near the terminator, an even big crater, Clavius, with 230.8km in diameter.
PT: Neste dia 20 de julho, mas há 50 anos atrás e a bordo da missão Apollo 11, dois astronautas da Nasa preparavam-se para dar “um pequeno passo para o homem, mas um grande salto para a humanidade”. Depois de pousar com sucesso na superfície do nosso satélite, Neil Armstrong e Buzz Aldrin estavam preparados para fazer a primeira caminhada alguma vez realizada, na superfície de “outro mundo”, a Lua. Esta cena panorâmica lunar, poderia ser a visão a partir de uma cápsula espacial a sobrevoar a lua, no entanto, foi captada aqui da Terra a partir do Observatório Oficial do Dark Sky® Alqueva, na Cumeada, Portugal. Total Solar Eclipse with Diamond´s Ring above La Serena Mountains
One of the most beautiful things about viewing a total solar eclipse, is the light from the inner and outer corona which starts to be visible showing fine structures and the lines from magnetic fields. On 2nd July, 2019, thousands of people located in some parts of Chile and Argentina had the incredible opportunity to witness the unique and unforgettable moment when the Moon itself completely blocks the sun´s disc. This image above is a sequence of three shots wich includes Totality and the beginning and end of Diamond ring phenomenon, which happens due to the rugged lunar limb topography of the moon that allows beads of sunlight to shine through. A shining diamond set in a bright ring around the lunar silhouette. The image above was captured in Lambert, 30km northeast of La Serena, Chile.

A Super Worm Moon Rising Over Evoramonte Tower in Spring Equinox
The image features the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere with a beautiful Super “Worm Moon” – as it is named according to folklore – rising behind the Tower/Palace of Evoramonte. Supermoons happen when a full moon approximately coincides with the moon’s perigee, or a point in its orbit at which it is closest to Earth. This makes the moon appear larger and brighter than usual. In Evoramonte was signed on 26th May of 1834, a Peace Treaty known as “Convention of Evoramonte” or “Concession of Evoramonte” which ended the only Portuguese civil war in almost 900 years of History. Due to this important historical heritage, Evoramonte is also the birthplace of the European Network of Places of Peace (www.placesofpeace.eu). At the highest point of the village of Evoramonte rises the Tower/Palace of Evoramonte commonly considered as the “ex-libris” of the village. The Tower/ Palace of Evoramonte was built by the Dukes of Bragança D. Teodósio and D. Jaime as a symbol of its power reflected in the tie of Manueline reminiscences that is the symbolic mark of the heraldry of the House of Bragança.

Beresheet – A Meaning, a Lunar Lander, a Luxury Spot over Ramon Crater in Negev Desert
The image features a startrail captured during the moonlight, with a moon path setting between the suites from Beresheet hotel. Set high on a cliff top with a unique view over Ramon Crater or “Makhtesh Ramon” in Israel’s Negev Desert. Is the world’s largest “erosion cirque” – a landform which are only found in the Negev and its extension into Egypt’s Sinai desert. Beresheet word means “in the beginning” or “at the start” and it is also the name of a SpaceIL’s lunar lander, launched from Cape Canaveral on a used SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on Feb. 21, 2019, along with an Indonesian communications satellite and a U.S. Air Force satellite. Over nearly two months, the craft will boost itself into successively longer loops around the planet until reaches the moon. Beresheet carries a time capsule of digital records and an instrument to study the moon’s magnetic field. The Crescent Moon above the Old City of Jerusalem as Seen from the Olive Mount
The image shows a crescent Moon featuring a faint earthshine above the old city of Jerusalem, as seen from the Mount of Olives. It is one of the oldest cities in the world, and is considered holy to the three major Abrahamic religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. During its long history, Jerusalem has been destroyed at least twice, besieged 23 times, captured and recaptured 44 times, and attacked 52 time. The only part that survived to all attacks along the history and stills partially intact until today, is the Western Wall, or “Wailing Wall”, the most religious site in the world for the Jewish people. Located inside the Old City of Jerusalem, it is the western support wall of the Temple Mount, visible in the right side of the image as a blue base and a golden dome, well known as the Temple Rock. The Temple Mount is a holy site within the Old City for Jewish, Christian and Muslim people, the walls were built around the summit of Mount Moriah, where biblically, Abraham offered his son, Isaac, as a sacrifice. In Muslim tradition, this is where the Prophet Mohammed made his “Night Journey” to the throne of God from the rock located at the center of the structure. The Foundation Stone in the temple, was built over bears great significance in Judaism as the place where God created the world and the first human, Adam.

The image is a result of two combined exposures taken in the same time, to reveal the mystic scenario where a bright moon is shinning above the Pena Palace (Palácio da Pena), a Romanticist castle located on a top hill of Sintra town, in Portugal. Being a national monument is also considered one of the major expressions of 19th-century Romanticism in the world. The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.

During a lunar eclipse, the moon passes through Earth’s shadow, giving the natural satellite a blood-red hue. For being near the closest point to our planet Earth, this Moon was also called a “Super Moon”. The next total lunar eclipse will be in 2021. A Lunar Corona is formed while bright moonlight is diffracted by water droplets in thin clouds, drifting in front of the lunar disk. A Panoramic Views Shows the Moonlight over Niagara Falls
Created by glacier activity around 10000 years ago, Niagara Falls is one the of the World’s Natural Wonders. Located on the border of Ontario, Canada and New York State, USA, Niagara Falls are made up of 3 waterfalls, the American Falls, the Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. The 3 waterfalls combined, is producing the highest flow rate of any waterfall on Earth. The Horseshoe Falls are 180 feet (57 meters) high and allow 6 million cubic feet (168,000 cubic meters) of water every minute during peak daytime tourist hours, “that is about a million bathtubs full of water every minute”! Although, according this and having in mind the total volume of our natural satellite, the Moon, with 2.1958e10 km3 it would need to take of about 248 years to fill up the entire sphere that represents the body of the Moon. The rapids above the Falls reach a maximum speed of 40 km/h, but the fastest speeds occur at the Falls with 109 km/h. Niagara River expert, Wes Hill, estimates that 90 % of the fish can survive from the huge drop. At the current rate of erosion, scientists believe that the Niagara Falls will be gone in around 50000 years, luckily you still have time to be one of the 30 million people that every year are visiting the place. This panoramic view shows the Moon and Mars above American Falls, just few minutes after starting the light show that illuminates in different hues the 3 Falls. Below, a boat from Hornblower Niagara Cruises, not so iconic as The Maid of the Mist that made its first trip in 1846, is carrying aboard hundreds of people that in the background, has a massive flow of 567,811 liters of water falling each second.

As Cataratas Horseshoe têm 180 pés (57 metros) de altura e permitem a passagem de 168.000 metros cúbicos de água a cada minuto, durante o dia e no horário de pico turístico, isto é, cerca de um milhão de banheiras cheias de água a cada minuto! No entanto, de acordo com esses dados e tendo em mente o volume total de nosso satélite natural da Tera, a Lua, com 2.1958e10 km3, seria necessário cerca de 248 anos para preencher toda a esfera que representa o corpo da Lua. Acima das Cataratas a água atinge uma velocidade máxima de 40 km/h, mas as velocidades mais rápidas ocorrem nas Cataratas onde a água se precipita em queda livre atingindo os 109 km/h. O especialista do Rio Niágara, Wes Hill, estima que 90% dos peixes conseguem sobreviver da enorme queda. A Pinky Sky with a Golden Moon above Niagara Falls
Created by glacier activity around 10000 years ago, Niagara Falls is one the of the World’s Natural Wonders. Located on the border of Ontario, Canada and New York State, USA, Niagara Falls are made up of 3 waterfalls, the American Falls, the Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. The 3 waterfalls combined, is producing the highest flow rate of any waterfall on Earth. The Horseshoe Falls are 180 feet (57 meters) high and allow 6 million cubic feet (168,000 cubic meters) of water every minute during peak daytime tourist hours, “that is about a million bathtubs full of water every minute”! Although, according this and having in mind the total volume of our natural satellite, the Moon, with 2.1958e10 km3 it would need to take of about 248 years to fill up the entire sphere that represents the body of the Moon. The rapids above the Falls reach a maximum speed of 40 km/h, but the fastest speeds occur at the Falls with 109 km/h. Niagara River expert, Wes Hill, estimates that 90 % of the fish can survive from the huge drop. At the current rate of erosion, scientists believe that the Niagara Falls will be gone in around 50000 years, luckily you still have time to be one of the 30 million people that every year are visiting the place. The image shows a golden crescent moon against the pink band from anti-twilight arch, or “Belt of Venus”, visible few minutes after the sunset when lots of birds are flying above American Falls & Bridal Veil Falls. Below, a boat from Hornblower Niagara Cruises, not so iconic as The Maid of the Mist that made its first trip in 1846, is carrying aboard hundreds of people that in the background has a massive flow of 567,811 liters of water falling each second.

Localizadas na fronteira de Ontário, Canadá e Estado de Nova York, EUA, as Cataratas do Niágara são compostas por 3 cataratas, as Cataratas Americanas, as Cataratas de Bridal Veil e as Cataratas Canadenses. As Cataratas Horseshoe têm 180 pés (57 metros) de altura e permitem a passagem de 168.000 metros cúbicos de água a cada minuto, durante o dia e no horário de pico turístico, isto é, cerca de um milhão de banheiras cheias de água a cada minuto! No entanto, de acordo com esses dados e tendo em mente o volume total de nosso satélite natural da Tera, a Lua, com 2.1958e10 km3, seria necessário cerca de 248 anos para preencher toda a esfera que representa o corpo da Lua. Acima das Cataratas a água atinge uma velocidade máxima de 40 km/h, mas as velocidades mais rápidas ocorrem nas Cataratas onde a água se precipita em queda livre atingindo os 109 km/h. O especialista do Rio Niágara, Wes Hill, estima que 90% dos peixes conseguem sobreviver da enorme queda. No ritmo atual de erosão, os cientistas acreditam que as Cataratas do Niágara terão desaparecido em cerca de 50000 anos, felizmente ainda terá tempo de ser uma das 30 milhões de pessoas que todos os anos visitam o local. Visible Corona during the Partial Phase of the Total Lunar Eclipse
Sequence of the partial ending phase of the longest Total Lunar Eclipse of the Century, where during a few seconds some iridescent clouds and a short Lunar Corona around the eclipsed disk of the moon showed up, due to a short presence of passing clouds. While the partial phase is moving forward, we can also see the intense light of the sun catching and hiding the well known Tycho Crater.
PT: Sequência da fase final parcial do mais longo Eclipse Lunar Total do Século, onde durante alguns segundos apareceram algumas nuvens iridescentes formando uma Corona Lunar ao redor do disco eclipsado da lua. Estas formações ocorrem devido à presença de uma camada fina de nuvens que contém normalmente micro cristais de gelo que refractam a luz de Lua. Enquanto a fase parcial avança na sequência Time Lapse, também podemos ver a intensa luz solar que vai ocultando por sobre exposição a conhecida cratera Tycho.
Total Lunar Eclipse in the Twilight

Red Worlds – Moon and Mars Aligned Together During Total Lunar Eclipse
Only separated by approximately 6º apart, the red-orange planet Mars didn´t want to miss the “Red Celestial Party ” standing very close to the Moon during the longest Total Lunar Eclipse of the Century – 27th July 2018 – as seen from Dark Sky® Alqueva region in Portugal, this mosaic shows both in the same field of view. During a lunar eclipse, the moon passes through Earth’s shadow, giving the natural satellite a blood-red hue. With Mars making its closest approach in 15 years. The Red planet was also in opposition to the sun on this same night of the Lunar Eclipse, July 27, meaning being in opposite the sun in Earth’s sky, only 51 days before it passes through perihelion — its closest point relative to the sun in its orbit.

The Longest Total Lunar Eclipse of the Century as seen from Portugal
The image shows a close-up view of a red dark Moon taken with a telephoto lens during the longest Total Lunar Eclipse of the Century, on 27th July 2018, as seen from Dark Sky® Alqueva region in Portugal. During a lunar eclipse, the moon passes through Earth’s shadow, giving the natural satellite a blood-red hue. The image was capture few minutes after the end of occultation of the star HD195157 in Capricornus. With a visual magnitude of +8.93 it can be seen very close to the right limb of the moon (look at 3 o´clock).

Flying above Moretus Crater
This lunar landscape scene, captured from Cumeada Observatory, headquarter of Dark Sky Alqueva reserve, shows in detail the lunar impact crater of Moretus (located at left), with a diameter of 114km. Due to the location near the lunar limb, the crater appears oblong because of foreshortening. The rim of the crater has a wide, terraced inner wall, and a complex outer rampart. The floor has been partly resurfaced and is relatively flat. In the middle is a central mountain formation that rises about 2.1 kilometers above the surrounding floor.
PT: Um cenário de paisagem lunar, captado a partir do Observatório da Cumeada, sede da reserva Dark Sky Alqueva, mostra em detalhe a cratera de impacto lunar Moretus (localizada à esquerda), com um diâmetro de 114km. Devido à localização perto do limbo lunar, a cratera parece oblonga por causa do escorço. A borda da cratera tem uma parede interna ampla, com pequenos terraços e uma muralha externa complexa. O piso foi parcialmente ressurgido e é relativamente plano. No centro está uma formação montanhosa que se eleva cerca de 2,1km acima do piso ao redor.

Flying over the Moon Crater Aristoteles and Rimae of Theaetetus
This lunar landscape scene, captured from Cumeada Observatory, headquarter of Dark Sky Alqueva reserve, shows in detail the lunar impact crater of Aristoteles (upper left corner), with a diameter of 87,6km, and below it, the crater of Eudoxus, with a diameter of 70,2km. Almost centred is visible the Cassini crater with 56,4,km that includes two small craters, featuring Cassini A and Cassini B, with respectively 15km, and only 9km in diameter. From the bottom center to the low edge of the image, are visible two main rilles, the Rima Calippus with a lenght of 20km and Rimae of Theaetetus, with a length of 25km. On the right side, we can also see another two large craters, Aristillus with a diameter of 55km, and below it, the crater of Autolycus with 38,9km.

A Full Moon above the Medieval Village of Monsaraz
April’s full moon is known as the Pink Moon, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac. The name comes from pink flowers that bloom in the early spring, known as ground phlox. But this April Moon is particularly good to photograph, as the sun will share the sky for about 20 minutes after the moonrise, it will work as the perfect light that still illuminates the landscape, entire fields, or in my case, the beautiful medieval village and castle of Monsaraz, in Alqueva Dark Sky® Reserve, Portugal. To create this visual impact with the illusion that the Moon seems to be so big when compared with the objects on Earth, I just had to find the right spot located at a distant of about 3.7 km away from the castle. The result is a single shot captured with a 600mm lens.
PT: A Lua cheia de abril é conhecida como a Pink Moon, de acordo com o antigo Almanaque do Fazendeiro. O nome está relacionado com as flores cor-de-rosa que florescem no início da primavera, conhecida como “ground phlox”. Mas esta Lua de Abril é particularmente boa para fotografar, pois o sol ainda compartilha o mesmo céu durante cerca de 20 minutos, após o nascimento da lua, funcionando como a luz perfeita para iluminar a paisagem, os campos ou, no meu caso, a linda vila medieval e o castelo de Monsaraz, no Dark Sky® Alqueva, Portugal. Para criar este impacto visual e a ilusão óptica de que a Lua parece ser tão grande quando comparada com os objetos em Terra, apenas tive de encontrar o local certo localizado a uma distância de cerca de 3,7 km do castelo de Monsaraz. O resultado deste disparo único, foi captado com uma lente de 600 mm de distância focal.

Rather than Blue, the rising moon can appear yellow-orange when it is near the horizon due to the way light scatters in the atmosphere. When the moon is low on the horizon, moonlight passes through more of Earth’s atmosphere than when it is overhead. By the time light reaches the observer, the blue and green light has already been scattered, leaving only the red-orange light. We’ve already had one Blue Moon in January 2018, and the last time this rare event of two Blue Moons occurred in such quick succession was January and March of 1999.

A Dreaming Waning Crescent Moon
The photo shows a slightly Waning Crescent Moon rising at Dawn, against a beautiful background from the twilight and behind a pink band of clouds, just few minutes before the Sunrise. Captured above Monsaraz and lake Alqueva, in Dark Sky® Alqueva reserve, the disk was only 6% illuminated by Sun, remind us that planet Venus also can have very similar phases, that can be seen through a telescopic view from Earth, in the right time of the year. When Venus reaches its greatest approach to Earth it shows a slightly Crescent shape – an opposite result of this Waning Crescent Moon.
PT: Na foto é possível ver uma lua minguante que se levanta às primeiras horas do dia por detrás de uma nuvem rosada contra um colorido fundo crepuscular, apenas alguns minutos antes do Sol nascer. Captada acima de Monsaraz, na reserva Dark Sky® Alqueva, com o disco lunar apenas 6% iluminado pelo Sol, relembra-nos que o Planeta Vénus também pode apresentar fases muito similares às da Lua e que podem ser vistas a partir da Terra com o auxílio de um telescópio, na altura certa do ano. Quando Vénus atinge o ponto de máxima aproximação à Terra, apresenta uma magnitude de -4.5, tornando-se o planeta mais brilhante da esfera celeste, revelando uma fase Crescente similar, mas oposta à que a Lua apresenta nesta fotografia.

Super Blue Moon, Rising Behind a Wind Mill
A Super Blue Moon rising above a wind mill from Sesimbra, in Portugal. The second Full Moon of the month is well known as the “Blue Moon”. Supermoons happen when a full moon approximately coincides with the moon’s perigee, or a point in its orbit at which it is closest to Earth. This makes the moon appear up to 8 percent larger and 16 percent brighter than usual. The Super Moon from January 2018 was very unusual because it also happened a Total Lunar Eclipse, although, it was not visible from Portugal. Below is a Time Lapse sequence captured during Moonrise.

As popularmente designadas Super Luas acontecem, quando uma lua cheia coincide aproximadamente com o perigeu da lua, o ponto em sua órbita que está mais próximo da Terra. Isso faz com que a lua apareça até 8% maior e 16% mais brilhante do que o normal. A Super Lua de janeiro de 2018 foi muito incomum porque também permitiu a ocorrência de um Eclipse Lunar Total, embora não fosse visível de Portugal. Abaixo está uma sequência Time Lapse captada durante o nascer da lua.
Lunar Corona above Town Hall in Grand Place
This cityscape shows a colourful lunar corona at the left side of the Town Hall in the city of Brussels, capital of European Union (EU). The lunar corona is formed while bright moonlight is diffracted by water droplets in thin clouds, drifting in front of the lunar disk. The beautiful building in the foreground is the Town Hall of the City of Brussels, a Gothic building from the Middle Ages – between 1401 and 1455 – and made the Grand Place the seat of municipal power. The major tower have 96 metres (315 ft) high, and is capped by a 4-metre (12 ft) statue of Saint Michael slaying a demon. It is located on the famous Grand Place in Brussels, Belgium, and is the only remaining medieval building of the Grand Place and is considered a masterpiece of civil Gothic architecture and more particularly of Brabantine Gothic. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Grand-Place testifies in particular to the success of Brussels, mercantile city of northern Europe that, at the height of its prosperity, rose from the terrible bombardment inflicted by the troops of Louis XIV in 1695. Destroyed in three days, this gothic building has survived.
PT: Esta paisagem urbana mostra uma colorida coroa lunar à esquerda da Câmara Municipal da cidade de Bruxelas, capital da União Europeia (UE). A coroa lunar é formada devido à difração da luz brilhante do luar nas gotas de água presentes em nuvens finas, que transitam na frente do disco lunar. O magnífico edifício em primeiro plano, é a Câmara Municipal da Cidade de Bruxelas, um edifício gótico da Idade Média – entre 1401 e 1455 – que fez da Grand Place o lugar do poder municipal. A torre principal tem 96 metros (315 pés) de altura e está coberta por uma estátua de 4 metros (12 pés) de Saint Michael, matando um demónio. Localizado na famosa Grand Place, em Bruxelas, na Bélgica, é o único edifício medieval que permanece da Grand Place original e é considerado uma obra-prima da arquitetura gótica civil e mais particularmente do Brabantine Gothic. Moonlight and Jupiter Shinning above Corta da Mina Landscape
A Moonlight scene in a cloudy sky with bright planet Jupiter shinning above Corta da Mina landscape, that is the result of the open-pit mining operation begun in 1867 in São Domingos Mine. It has a geometrical shape of an ellipse and a depth of 120 m and a perimeter of approximately 2 km. It was the place from which the ores were extracted: the pyrites, sulfur, copper, iron, zinc, gold and silver. Around the cavity it is possible to observe several types of heaps constituted by diverse materials such as modern slag of black color, brownish Roman slag, gossan fragments of reddish color and encasing mineralization rocks like vulcanites and schists. Some of these commons have significant gold contents assuming the presence of iMt from heaps with 1g / t gold. ” After the end of the work, in 1966, the abandonment of the extraction of water from the bottom of the mine allowed the rise groundwater level within the cut to the current, apparently stationary point. The water currently contained in the cut is extremely acidic (Ph = 2) giving the water an incredible color variation with colours ranging from reddish tones to oranges and yellows, it contains a large amount of dissolved sulfates, mainly iron and arsenic sulfates, but also copper and zinc.

It has been a sought after place for the extraction of ores since antiquity, with evidence of gold, silver and copper mining in the pre-Roman and Roman times. The pyritic deposit of São Domingos (St. Dominic) was explored in various historical periods, namely: for several centuries of the first millennium BC (Eastern period), during the period between 14 BC and 395 AD (Roman period), during the Islamic period and during the modern period that was initiated in 1858 for the extraction of copper, gold and silver and was maintained until 1966, the year in which the reserves were considered exhausted. During this period, the work was done in the open air up to 120 meters deep, with work continued through wells and galleries up to 400 meters. Over 108 years of regular exploration, more than 20 million tons of materials were removed from the site, producing about 14.7 million tons of waste accumulated in heaps up to 14 meters high with a dozen different materials such as pyrite , gossan, slag, ash, iron oxides, barren rock, sludge, debris, etc. The areas of heaps, slag and channels of water, give the landscape a “lunar” aspect. The heaps are composed of different materials with high levels of metals, such as slag and ash, whose leaching through the rainwater leads to the production of acid mine drainage, usually with an ocher or reddish color. |
PT: Um cenário ao Luar com a presença do planeta Jupiter a brilhar por detrás de um céu nublado que se precipita acima da paisagem acida da Corta da Mina, o resultado da exploração mineira a céu aberto encetada em 1867 na Mina de São Domingos, em Mértola. Possui uma forma geométrica de uma elipse e uma profundidade de 120 m e um perímetro de aproximadamente 2 km. Era o local de onde se extraíam os minérios: as pirites, enxofre, cobre, ferro, zinco, ouro e prata. Em torno da cavidade é possível observar vários tipos de escombreiras constituídas por materiais diversos como escórias modernas de cor negra, escórias romanas acastanhadas, fragmentos de gossan de cor avermelhada e rochas encaixantes da mineralização como vulcanitos e xistos. Alguns destes corpos de encombros apresentam teores significativos de ouro admitindo-se a presença de iMt de escombreiras com 1g/t de ouro.” Após o fim da laboração, em 1966, o abandono da extração de água do fundo da mina permitiu a subida do nível freático dentro da corta até ao ponto atual, aparentemente estacionário.
A água hoje contida na corta é extremamente ácida (Ph=2) conferindo à água uma variação cromática incrível com cores que vão desde tons avermelhados, a laranjas e amarelos, contém uma grande quantidade de sulfatos dissolvidos, principalmente sulfatos de ferro e arsénico mas também de cobre e zinco

A twilight of a “double” moonrise reflected in a puddle of acid water from Achada do Gamo, that was – since the beginning of modern mining activities in the São Domingos Mine – the center of metallurgical activities on extracted minerals. Super Full Cold Moon Rising above Lake Alqueva in Monsaraz
With the disk illuminated 98%, the photo shows the moon rising against the pink background from “Belt of Venus”, anti-twilight arch phenomenon, above Monsaraz and lake Alqueva, in Dark Sky® Alqueva reserve, one day before the “Full Cold Moon” of December – as it is known – reaches a 100% of light. It will also be the first (and last) “supermoon” of 2017. Supermoons happen when a full moon approximately coincides with the moon’s perigee, or a point in its orbit at which it is closest to Earth. This makes the moon appear up to 8 percent larger and 16 percent brighter than usual.
A Baby Moon is Shinning and Heating
A baby moon is growing and heating while is reflecting more and more sunlight over the days. The shinning side of the moon can reach temperatures of 253 degrees F (123º C) contrasting with the “shadow side” that can have temperatures dipping to minus 243 F (minus 153º C). Less then half of the hottest temperature on the Moon would be enough to start a series of fires in our forests around the Planet. While this “baby” Moon is growing and showing a beautiful Earthshine, here on Earth, Firefighters are fighting like heroes each year, showing the strength and courage to facing the real power of heating, trying to save more human and animal lives as well as avoiding the devastation provoked by fires that leading to an end of the nature in his wild state.
The sculpture in the foreground visible in the image were made by Charneca Brothers, and was erected in Reguengos de Monsaraz, Dark Sky® Alqueva Reserve to honor the Firefighters on their 75th anniversary.

Enquanto esta lua “bebé” cresce e nos revela um lindo Earthshine lunar, aqui na Terra, bombeiros lutam como heróis a cada ano, mostrando uma força e coragem incansável para enfrentar o poder real do calor proveniente dos fogos florestais, tentando assim salvar mais vidas humanas e animais, evitando a devastação provocada por incêndios, que levam à extinção da natureza no seu estado mais puro e selvagem.

Partial Phase of the Eclipse – Moon´s Disc near Sunspots AR2671
On August 21, 2017, I and millions of people across the United States had the opportunity to witness the unique and unforgettable moment when the Moon itself completely blocks the sun´s disc. The image above was captured in Stanley Lake, Idaho, during the partial phase after totality, where we could see the shadow of the Moon´s disc near the group of Sunspots – known as Active Regions (AR) – AR2671.

One of the most beautiful and deeply things that we can experience in nature, is viewing a total solar eclipse. When the diamond ring appears for the first time and the Baily’s beads phenomenon turns on, we start to listen people screaming and crying…immediately after that, the beautiful light from solar corona becomes visible, and the daytime becomes twilight, it´s really impressive! On August 21, 2017, I and millions of people across the United States had the opportunity to witness the unique and unforgettable moment when the Moon itself completely blocks the sun´s disc.
The image above, was captured in the beautiful Stanley Lake, Idaho, few seconds in the end of Totality, and when it seems to me that I have catch the similar phenomenon of Earth Shadow, but this time produced not by the shadow of Earth itself, but by the shadow of moon to be in front of the sun, and maybe intensified by the fact that the sun was starting to appear a little bit which means that could have projected well the shadow of the moon disc and due also the fact that in the ground the light was yet faint like twilight, allowing to be more well seen with naked eye. I also would like to add, that I only noticed this because I took another shot with the same setup and position, just few seconds later and the pink shadow near the horizon have vanished.

A corona (Latin, ‘crown’) is an aura of plasma that surrounds the sun and other stars. The Sun’s corona extends millions of kilometres into space and is most easily seen during a total solar eclipse, but it is also observable with a coronagraph. The word “corona” is a Latin word meaning “crown”, from the Ancient Greek κορώνη (korōnè, “garland, wreath”).
The maximum temperature inside of our star is about 16 million degrees (Celsius). The photosphere – the visible surface of the Sun – has a temperature of about 6000 degrees C. However, the temperature increases very steeply from 6000 degrees to a few million degrees in the corona, in the region 500 kilometers above the photosphere.
Half of the Moon and Lunar X in a Craters Show
When the Moon in it´s orbital movement around Earth is 50% illuminated the by sunlight, can show us a beautiful game of light and shadows providing a remarkable view from its large and small craters, in a one night show for an observer equipped with a telescope. In this high resolution sharp mosaic of two panels, composed by an average stack of 16 pictures each one, the crescent moon lies at a distance of more than 373,000km from Earth, showing besides the grey landscape spread by lunar impacts of ancient times, an interesting shape known as the Lunar X (try to find it for yourself). This strange effect in which light and shadow creates the appearance of a letter ‘X’ on the rim of the Blanchinus, La Caille and Purbach craters, is only visible for a few hours before the first quarter, slightly below the lunar terminator. But this fine sharp picture, can also provide a detailed view from craters like, Aristoteles with a diameter of 87km and a depth of 3.3 km, lies near the southern edge of the Mare Frigoris and to the east of the Montes Alpes mountain range. Posidonius (with a diameter of 95 km and a 2.3 km of depth) is a lunar impact crater that is located on the north-eastern edge of Mare Serenitatis, to the south of Lacus Somniorum. The floor is also slightly bulged due to the past lava uplift, which also likely produced the complex of rilles. The crater Chacornac is attached to the southeast rim, and to the north is Daniell. Not far away, in the northeast part of the Moon we find a similar but smaller shape of Hercules (with diameter of 69 km and a 3.2 km of depth).The crater floor has been flooded by lava in the past, and contains several areas of low albedo. Neste mosaico de alta resolução de dois painéis, composto cada um por 16 imagens empilhadas, a lua crescente encontra-se a uma distância de mais de 373.000 quilómetros da terra, mostrando além da paisagem cinzenta salpicada pelos impactos lunares ocorridos em tempos ancestrais, uma “intrigante e interessante” forma conhecida como o Lunar X. Este estranho efeito em que luz e sombra criam a aparência de uma letra “X” na borda das crateras de Blanchinus, La Caille e Purbach, só pode ser visível por algumas horas antes da Lua atingir o Primeiro Quarto (Crescente), Ligeiramente abaixo do terminador lunar. Esta imagem, permite ainda aceder a uma visão detalhada de algumas crateras como, Aristoteles com um diâmetro de 87 km e uma profundidade de 3,3 km, que fica perto da borda sul da Mare Frigoris e ao leste da cordilheira Montes Alpes. Posidonius (com um diâmetro de 95 km e 2.3 km de profundidade) é uma cratera de impacto lunar que está localizada na borda nordeste de Mare Serenitatis, ao sul de Lacus Somniorum. O “chão” desta cratera também é ligeiramente abaulado devido ao seu passado associada à passagem de lava, que também produziu provavelmente o complexo de fissuras. A cratera Chacornac é anexada ao bordo sudeste, e ao norte encontra-se Daniell. Não muito longe, na parte nordeste da Lua, encontramos ainda uma forma similar mas de menor dimensão, a cratera Hércules (com diâmetro de 69 km e uma profundidade de 3,2 km). A Musician Inspired by the Moonlight
The moon has inspired over the centuries not only astronomers and scientists, but also poets, painters, writers and musicians, such as Beethoven who wrote the “Moonlight Sonata” in 1801. The April full moon is the first full moon of spring in the Northern Hemisphere (it’s the first fall season full moon in the Southern Hemisphere). Also known as the Pink Moon does not actually turn pink, not even when it´s rising above the horizon when normally can be seen more yellowish orange than white due to the layers of the atmosphere. In fact, the moon never changes its colour. Similar the other “moon names” it was originated in Native American traditions of keeping time based on lunar phases. The Pink Moon owes its name to pink flowers called wild ground phlox which bloom in springtime and become widespread throughout the U.S. and Canada this time of year.

Moon reflections in the Atlantic Ocean. The air his filled with a thin layer of smoke coming from a fire that broke out in the afternoon on a nearby mountain. At the right side of the bright water, we can see a small lighthouse from Vilamoura marina.
PT: Reflexos do luar nas águas do Oceano Atlântico. Este pôr-da-lua incomum estava rodeado pelas cinzas que pairavam na marina de Vilamoura, no Algarve, provenientes de um incêndio que deflagrou numa serra próxima da região. A ligeira neblina conferiu à imagem uma tonalidade rosada, com uma mística muito particular e a condizer com o pequeno farol vermelho que se pode ver em baixo à direita.

A skygazer is enjoying the busy night of London city, from a lovely balcony view, with the crescent moon visible at the left side of “The Shard” tower. Also referred as the Shard of Glass and formerly London Bridge Tower, is a 95-storey skyscraper in Southwark, London, that forms part of the London Bridge Quarter development. Penumbral Lunar Eclipse in the Harvest Moon above Sesimbra Castle
On september 16h the disc of the moon has reached the 100% illumination exactly at the same time he was rising in the portuguese sky. This september Full Moon is known, according to folklore, as the Harvest Moon, “a bright orb that shines down on the ripening fields of the northern hemisphere, allowing farmers to harvest their crops late into the night”. Besides his normal brightness when it is Full, this particular Moon was a bit darker then normal, due to a penumbral lunar eclipse, that happens when the Moon passes through the pale outskirts of Earth’s shadow. It is much less dramatic than a total lunar eclipse. The final image is a sequence shot captured during 25 minutes, at the moonrise, with a 200mm lens at about 700 meters away from the Sesimbra Castle, in Portugal.

While the Full Moon of June was rising above the clouds, a Lightning Storm has spread in the sky of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The whole forms the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times, showing how small we are in this Universe, but at the same time, how big we are as a Humankind. Developing and increasing our skills, creating the capacity of constructing and doing big things on Earth. This can be the closest real view and the ideia that we have of an UFO spaceship, that has indeed, human life on board of these spheres.

Designed by the engineer André Waterkeyn and architects André and Jean Polak it stands 102 m (335 ft) tall. Its nine 18 m (59 ft) diameter stainless steel clad spheres are connected. The name is a combination of atom and aluminium. It is a museum. The whole thing is made up of 9 spheres (one at each of the 8 points and one in the middle) connected by 20 tubes (12 cube edges plus 2 tubes for the 4 diagonals): the structure rests on 3 pillars (or bipods). They enclose stairs, escalators and a lift (in the central, vertical tube) to allow access to the five habitable spheres which contain exhibit halls and other public spaces. A permanent exhibition dedicated to Expo 58 and temporary exhibitions devoted to architecture, design and society. It could be the closest ideia we have of an UFO spaceship, that has indeed, human life on board of these 5 spheres. MC

Moon and Venus above the Ruins of Roman City Ammaia

The Gradual consolidation of Roman power led to the establishment of a substantial Roman town in the 1st century. Ammaia occupied up to 25 hectares, and with a population exceeding modern-day Marvão (5000-6000 inhabitants) Ammaia occupied the site of the present-day parish of São Salvador da Aramenha. The town flourished between the 1st century BCE and the collapse of the Roman Empire in the 5th century CE. Roman Ammaia saw the development of improved irrigation and terracing across the Marvão mountain. Chestnut cultivation – Replacing the place dominance of oak is likely to have been introduced at this time. Much of the terracing and ancient watercourses on the mountain Marvão date from this era.
Limited excavations at Ammaia in the past two decades covering a mere 3,000 m2 (32.292 sq ft) of the town’s area – have revealed the success, provincial expanding town that included running water, a forum, baths, the bridge over the river Sever (near today’s ‘Old Bridge’), and monumental gates (one gate was removed to Castelo de Vide in the 18th century, yet sadly dynamited in 1890). The Alentejo region, meanwhile, was criss-crossed with efficient Roman roads, providing links to the wider Empire. Fine wares found at the site Ammaia suggest que Ammaia nobility had access to luxury glassware and jewelery, while archeology has Revealed that marble for the forum was imported from across the Empire. The high quality, for example, of the ‘Mosaic of the Muses’ from a Roman villa in nearby Monforte (4th century BCE) points to the abundant riches to be made to an Alentejo landowner in the Roman era. Sadly, many artifacts from Ammaia in particular the series of marble sculptures were removed during the 19th and 20th centuries, notably by the Anglo-Portuguese Robinson family. These items are now in collections such as those of the British Museum..
Many of the excavations were concentrated over the obvious ruins or where there was evidence of subterranean structures associated with a Roman presence. Discoveries include parts of a Roman city wall with towers and a gate on the south side, with residenctial buildings; a road; a monumental paved square; remains of a house in the location Quinta do Deão; parts of a public bath building; and a centrally-located forum with well-preserved temple podium, walls of a porticus and cryptoporticus. The town plan follows a regular rectangular layout organized along two main perpendicular street axes, linking the central forum to its main gates. A city wall surrounds a roughly rectangular area of some 20 hectares. Several extramural buildings, cemeteries and roads constitute the suburban area.

Logo abaixo da Lua, é ainda possível ver o brilho arrastado do planeta Vénus. A Cidade de Ammaia é indubitavelmente o mais importante vestígio da sua época existente na região do norte alentejano. Localizada em pleno Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede, em São Salvador de Aramenha, no concelho de Marvão, a sua área central é constituída pela Quinta do Deão e pela Tapada da Aramenha, possuindo uma área de aproximadamente 25 ha.
Embora as suas ruínas tivessem sido classificadas como Monumento Nacional em 1949, estiveram abandonadas até finais de 1994. A partir desta data e com o aparecimento da Fundação Cidade de Ammaia vêm-se desenvolvendo todos os esforços no sentido de estudar e preservar o que resta desta importante cidade. Ammaia foi elevada a Civitas por volta do ano 44/45 d.C. tendo obtido o estatuto de Mvnicipivm ainda durante o séc. I d.C., no entanto apenas temos dados sobre o mesmo no reinado de Lúcio Vero, no ano de 166 d.C.

Many of the excavations were concentrated over the obvious ruins or where there was evidence of subterranean structures associated with a Roman presence. Discoveries include parts of a Roman city wall with towers and a gate on the south side, with residenctial buildings; a road; a monumental paved square; remains of a house in the location Quinta do Deão; parts of a public bath building; and a centrally-located forum with well-preserved temple podium, walls of a porticus and cryptoporticus. The town plan follows a regular rectangular layout organized along two main perpendicular street axes, linking the central forum to its main gates. A city wall surrounds a roughly rectangular area of some 20 hectares. Several extramural buildings, cemeteries and roads constitute the suburban area.
PT: Uma noite de luar envolta na neblina que circunda as importantes e imponentes ruínas da Porta Sul da cidade Romana da Ammaia, enquanto a Estação Espacial Internacional atravessa os céus da região. Logo abaixo da Lua, é ainda possível ver o brilho arrastado do planeta Vénus. A Cidade de Ammaia é indubitavelmente o mais importante vestígio da sua época existente na região do norte alentejano. Localizada em pleno Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede, em São Salvador de Aramenha, no concelho de Marvão, a sua área central é constituída pela Quinta do Deão e pela Tapada da Aramenha, possuindo uma área de aproximadamente 25 ha.
Embora as suas ruínas tivessem sido classificadas como Monumento Nacional em 1949, estiveram abandonadas até finais de 1994. A partir desta data e com o aparecimento da Fundação Cidade de Ammaia vêm-se desenvolvendo todos os esforços no sentido de estudar e preservar o que resta desta importante cidade. Ammaia foi elevada a Civitas por volta do ano 44/45 d.C. tendo obtido o estatuto de Mvnicipivm ainda durante o séc. I d.C., no entanto apenas temos dados sobre o mesmo no reinado de Lúcio Vero, no ano de 166 d.C.
