Telescopes at work in the Winter Sky and Moonlight captured from Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory
On an assignment for SOU- Secrets of the Universe, I did a time lapse comprising 6h of images and 700 frames, showing my two different telescopes at work in our Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory. While they are both collecting photons from the cosmos, against the winter sky is visible the Milky Way path with beautiful Orion shining bright, until the moment when bright moonlight rises and fill up the entire sky.

Trees – Welcoming the Winter in the Starry Skies of Alqueva – Time Lapse
I hope you enjoy most recent video time lapse showing the arrival of winter constellations in the starry skies of Dark Sky® Alqueva captured in one of the nights when conjunction between Mars and Jupiter was visible. They can be seen at the end as two major “bright stars” rising very close to each other under the branches of Alqueva Trees. Those same trees that have their arms open to the Universe…how many stories of history they have recorded in their roots….to me, Trees are like Wise Silent Observers…the ancient stargazers made from one of the rarest “elements” in the Universe…as “wood” only exists on planet Earth, at least, according to our present knowledge, maybe we can find proof of life in other planets….but, didn’t happened, yet!.

Smartphone Astrophoto with Google Pixel 9 Pro XL Shows a Time Lapse from Dark Sky® Alqueva Official Observatory
A new time lapse to show the capabilities of Smartphone Google Pixel 9 Pro XL for imaging nightscapes! This is a time lapse of 200 single shots of 16 seconds each, captured in sequence, from Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory. While my telescope was operating, in the background sky Pleiades star cluster M45 was rising as a bluish young group of stars, shining bright. Few years ago, this would just be a dream unreachable….but nowadays – thanks to technology and evolution- smartphones like Google Pixel 9 Pro XL they will definitely change the game in a near future.

Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas Featuring an Anti-Tail while Shining Under the Moonlight
Yesterday 13th October 2024, was a special day to capture the Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS as the Earth was passing through the comet’s orbital plane, and this is causing the comet to sprout an ‘anti-tail.’ It’s clearly visible the frontal spike coming out of the comet’s head. The image was taken from a beautiful field at Dark Sky® Alqueva territory in Portugal. The Moonlight was shining bright so it helped to illuminate quite well the landscape. Now the comet is clearly visible with naked-eye. I have more images and time lapses so stay tuned.
Agora o cometa é claramente visível a olho nu. Em baixo é ainda possível ver um time lapse do momento e um “behind the scene” captado pela Apolónia Rodrigues com um iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas in the Morning Twilight Before Deeply Dive into the Sun’s Glare
Here is my latest view of C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas captured on 30th September in the morning twilight, from Alandroal, Dark Sky® Alqueva territory in Portugal, before deeply dive into the Sun’s glare. Let’s hope for the best display after mid October when it will reach the closest point to Earth on October 12th and emerge from the Sun’s glare being again visible, this time, in the western horizon after sunset.

Dramatic Northern Lights Display as Seen from Portugal at 38º above Alqueva Lake – Photo and Time lapse
Captured on 10th of October, 2024, the image adn time lapse reveals an impressive display of northern lights in the presence of moonlight as seen from my location at 38º in Dark Sky® Alqueva, Portugal. The weather was not perfect and a bit cloudy, but it ended up creating an even more dramatic and spectacular display over Monsaraz Castle and lake Alqueva.

Peacock Sleeping on a Tree Under the Super Blue Moonlight
The image shows a peacock sleeping in a tree in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, in a special night on 20th August 2024, when the second full Moon of the Month happened, and for being as well at perigee was also called a Super Blue Moon. The single shot, also shows the background sky with high clouds covering the unfocused moon. I was surprised to see a tree full of peacocks, I din’t knew that they were sleeping on trees to protect themselves from predators. Even not being well visible on the image, the peacock had by its side one little offspring, which I only noticed by the end of my capture. NatGeo explains that the term “peacock” is commonly used to refer to birds of both sexes. Technically, only males are peacocks. Females are peahens, and together, they are called peafowl. Peacocks are large, colorful pheasants (typically blue and green) known for their iridescent tails. The two Asiatic species are the blue or Indian peafowl originally from the Indian subcontinent, and the green peafowl from Southeast Asia. According to wikipedia, the Ancient Greeks believed that the flesh of peafowl did not decay after death, so it became a symbol of immortality. In Hellenistic imagery, the Greek goddess Hera’s chariot was pulled by peacocks, birds not known to Greeks before the conquests of Alexander. Alexander’s tutor, Aristotle, refers to it as “the Persian bird”. When Alexander saw the birds in India, he was so amazed at their beauty that he threatened the severest penalties for any man who slew one. Claudius Aelianus writes that there were peacocks in India, larger than anywhere else. In Christianity, the peacock can also symbolise the cosmos if one interprets its tail with its many “eyes” as the vault of heaven dotted by the sun, moon, and stars. Due to the adoption by Augustine of the ancient idea that the peacock’s flesh did not decay, the bird was again associated with immortality.

The Beauty of Solar Activity – CME, Flares, Prominence Eruptions and an Acacia Tree
A solar time lapse of an entire full disc of the sun captured on September 2, 2024, reveals the beauty of solar activity with an unprecedented level details and depth as the result of new brand technique and workflow I developed. Besides so many interesting features in motion happening at the same time during the course of 3h comprised in a 6 seconds movie sequence, we could see minor eruptive prominences and loops around the limb, large filaments and small spicules dancing like hair in the wind. A small delicate line of plasma floating and stuck by the strong magnetic fields before being released. A fast and large eruption on the left limb, which I confirmed later being the unleash of a CME – Coronal Mass Ejection detected by CACTUS system at exactly the same time and angle (UT13:36 pa 097). The powerful flare M1.8 from Active Region AR3813 was immediately followed the by the CME and another flare even stronger M2.9 from AR3807. Finishing with a wonderful large prominence growing like an African tree, an “Umbrella Thorn Acacia” made of plasma, with their warm roots feed by the wild “savanna” which is the solar chromosphere. I believe that this is probably one of the most detailed solar time lapse ever made by an independent astrophotographer. Important to mention that these are real images captured by me with special solar equipment and not AI generated in any part, not even for noise reduction purposes. Follow me on Instagram at @miguel_claro to have access on my “behind the scenes” daily stories while capturing those images.
Background audio sound and Music
I carefully produced the final movie with a nice licensed music from Envato named “Commercial Space Rock” by AudioEarth, and I´ve included the real low frequency sounds of the Sun at the first seconds of the video, sonified by A. Kosovichev from Stanford Experimental Physics Lab with Data from ESA (European Space Agency) and NASA’s Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), speeded it up a factor 42,000 to bring it into the audible human-hearing range (kHz)) click here to listen the isolated sound. Sun’s natural vibrations provides scientists with a concrete representation of its dynamic movements. Also, in space due to the lack of air, It´s impossible to hear or record sounds as we perceive on Earth. But for a more immersive audio/visual impact, it was added a soft background sound of a volcanic eruption as we hear here on Earth, synchronised with the timeline in which close-up views of solar eruptions and large prominences appear on the screen. The time lapse sequence at the end of this page was captured from Dark Sky® Alqueva territory, in Portugal, with a Player One Saturn-M SQR camera and a Lunt telescope LS100, generating around 3TB of data. The final result is a 5K high resolution solar movie comprising 249 images over the course of about 3h, between UT11h28 and UT14h20.

International Space Station ISS Transiting in front of the Sun´s Chromosphere visible in H-alpha Emission
The image shows the International Space Station (ISS) silhouette while crossing in front of the Sun´s disc at a distance of 441.54km from us and at a speed of about 7.31km/s. The ISS completes an entire orbit around Earth each 90 minutes. Carrying on board astronauts, the large artificial satellite orbiting our planet with a width of 108.5 meters had an angular diameter of 62.58″ seems although very small when compared with the Solar disc with an angular size of 31.6′ was actually 30.3 times larger than the ISS at the moment of the passage. Hard to see it even with a special telescope equipped with Ha filters, only the fast video camera from Player One Astronomy Apollo-M Max with a shutter set to an high speed frame rate of 109 images per second at 16Bits, could capture this rare moment that happens in a blink of an eye. Seen from Figueira da Foz, northern cost of Portugal, on June 2, 2024, at 13h18m51s (UT 12h18m51.35s) the transit had a total duration of only 0,54 seconds. Its interesting to recognise on the picture the ISS structure with the solar panels and main body elements well distinct. The image also shows in great detail spicules on the surface, a large gas filament and a large active region, as well as a few solar prominences around the Sun’s lilmb. With a diameter of 1,392,000 km, our Sun is composed of 73% Hydrogen, 25% Helium and 2% from heavier elements. The video shows a time lapse of 200 images captured over the course of around 2 seconds. Images were processed individually withouth being stack, I was impressed with a quality achieved only with single frames. The ISS is visible in white on the first sequence, because of the inversion technique for processing the chromosphere with more depth. Second sequence shows the ISS in black without this inversion visible.

G5 The Epic Solar Storm of 10th May 2024 – Photos and Time Lapse
The image reveals the solar chromosphere captured in a special day which made history here on Earth with the most severe geomagnetic storm of the last 20 years taking place, spreading aurora borealis also known as northern lights almost all over the world. Captured on the 10th of May 2024, from Dark Sky® Alqueva territory, in Portugal, the higher-resolution image and time lapse sequence shows the chromosphere in motion featuring not only a gigantic prominence on the solar limb, but as well as the the giant sunspot AR3664 which was incredibly active releasing several eruptions, flares and CME’s in that same day. The video shows one of these minor eruptions just a few hours before arriving the G5 Kp9 storm which sparkled a northern lights display as seen from my location in Dark Sky® Alqueva, Portugal, at 38º latitude. The show was impressive, I could even see it with my naked eye around 23h15 and late in the night around 4h15, specially the vertical fast moving bands. I saw more Aurora Borealis than when I visited Iceland for the first time. I was expecting something more subtle in reddish hues, but it was full of colors and sometimes going very high almost reaching the Zenith. It was an unforgettable day, I couldn’t imagine that during the morning of May 10th I would be live capturing images from my terrace of the Solar Active Region AR3664 where the charged particles of the solar wind were released. But most specially, without knowing that in the same night and just a few hours apart, I would be collecting photons with my DSLR camera, witnessing the arrival of the charged particle from a cannibal CME released in the days before. As result of the excited atoms in the upper atmosphere, we get a colorful display of the northern lights above our observatory and wonderful lake of Dark Sky® Alqueva region, in Portugal. I felt so fortunate for this moment in history! The final result is a 4K high resolution solar movie comprising around 2h of photos with 349 images.

Whispers of Totality
The video reveals the most incredible moments of the Total Solar Eclipse from 8th April 2024, as seen from Clarcksville in Texas, US. It shows the begining of first C2 contact, when Diamond Rings starts to appear from a wide view, until the last glimps of sun rays while crossing mountains and valley’s on the Moon surface revealing the Baily’s Beads, the last seconds before starts the magical moment of Totality when the Sun’s Aura turns visible. The Solar Corona is extremely hot and dynamic, being the outermost layer of the Sun’s atmosphere, it reveals intricate fine structures of delicate details distorted by the strong magnetic fields. The plasma of the corona features a lot of loops and wispy white streamers radiating into space. But due to an immense level of brightness it is only possible to see when the Moon is perfectly covering our Sun.
Whispers of Totality not only shows the beauty of the Total Solar Eclipse in all it’s glory, but also the recorded whispers of our Portuguese voices and the emotions we were living during the Maximum of Totality. This was the most stressful time of our lives, without knowing until the very end, if we could make it. Me and my wife Apolónia, we travelled from Portugal to Pearsall, in Texas, as planned, but the forecast was indeed terrible almost in the entire US, or at least where the path was located. So after many hours driving from Dallas to Houston and then to Pearsall, with the rest of the week monitoring with several different models the evolution of the weather forecast, we have decided – even with a certain risk -that we must need to move back to north, again, to be more close to Oklahoma state. So on the day before the Eclipse, we had to drive back to Dallas during five or six hours and in the morning of the Eclipse, we did an extra two hours drive, to reach a small city called, Clarksville, in the northeast of Texas. At 10 AM the sky was still cloudy, and I only had 2 hours before the Eclipse starts, which means, to prepare the entire setup of 6 cameras with lens, tripods, mounts, filters, cables etc. Fortunately, like a miracle, just 5 minutes before totality starts, the sky cleared up where the Sun was located and during the Maximum it was completely crystal clear, at least, for around 1min and 30 seconds, calm and windless until the end. It was just…Magical!!

Solar Plasma Blast Released into Space on 31th January 2024
Captured on the 31th of January, 2024, from Dark Sky® Alqueva region, Portugal, a high-resolution image and time lapse sequence features the chromosphere activity, revealing the exact moment when a solar blast released plasma into space, and then returned back to the Solar disc, pushed by the strong force of gravity. It’s possible to see a lot of interesting changes on its intricate shape. We can also notice a lot of fine spicules surrounding the solar disc and dancing like hair in the wind, while the chromosphere itself is showing a slower motion. The final result is a 4K high resolution solar time lapse footage comprising around 1h30 of photos.

Large Solar Prominence in Motion Catured on 22th January 2024
Captured on the 22th of January, 2024, from Dark Sky® Alqueva region, Portugal, a high-resolution image and time lapse sequence features the chromosphere activity, revealing a large prominence in motion. It’s possible to see a lot of interesting changes on its shape. We can also notice a lot of fine spicules surrounding the solar disc, while the chromosphere itself is showing a slower motion. Even with a few high clouds which almost distroyed the sequence, I’ve manage to manually adjust the quick changes in light and keep the sequence runing to produce a time lapse of about 332 images. The final result is a 4K high resolution solar movie comprising around 2h of photos.

2023 Bright Perseid Meteor and a Persistent Train
A time lapse sequence captured during Perseids meteor shower 2023 from Dark Sky® Alqueva, in Portugal, shows a fast bright meteor traveling at a speed of about 60 kilometers per second, disintegrating while passing through the thin atmosphere at high altitude. Meteors can excite green emission from oxygen atoms releasing the color we see, originated from ionized chemical elements. Blue-green is typically originated from magnesium, nickel also glows in green color, while calcium is radiating violet. Immediately after explodes, this Perseid meteor was lingering a visible orange trail, known as a persistent train, which persists visible for a few minutes. According to Nasa, “the glow emanated from atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere in the path of the meteor – atoms that had an electron knocked away and emit light during reacquisition.” The time lapse shows the initial wind-blown displacement of these bright former ions, while the “orange smoke” dissipates and drifts away in the Earth atmosphere.

Super “Blue” Moon 2023 Rising Over Monsaraz Castle – Photo and Time Lapse
A single shot shows a Super Full “Blue” Moon which don’t have nothing of blue, rising above Monsaraz castle at Dark Sky® Alqueva, in Portugal. Blue Moon is just called when two full moons happen in the same month. Supermoons happen when a full moon approximately coincides with the moon’s perigee, or a point in its orbit at which it is closest to Earth. This makes the moon appear larger and brighter than usual. Below is a time lapse of this singular moment, to watch with sound on.

Make a wish…The Perseids Meteor Shower is Coming
Make a wish…the Perseids meteor shower is coming, with a peak happening next weekend from Friday night 11th to 12th, and Saturday 12th to 13th August, has an estimated average of 100 meteors per hour. The new moon will help the night show. Try to look for dark places and avoid being close to street lights. I’ve choose Dark Sky® Alqueva in Portugal, where I live, but you might look for a comfortable and safety place near your location. Meteors might appear to come from Perseus constellation where is located the radiant although they tend to be best visible late in the night, 45° away from the radiant in any direction up to the Zenith. The video I’m sharing today is made from real meteors accurately star aligned from a 360° VR scene I’ve captured during Perseids 2021, from one of our Dark Skies in Portugal. Watch the video with sound on ? Happy Perseids for everyone!
A lua nova ajudará o show.

After checking many elements with so many coincidences I have now almost 99,9% certain that two nights ago, from 23th to 24th April, when I was over night at the official Observatory of Dark Sky® Alqueva, in Cumeada village, Portugal, capturing my latest deep sky target in a region of the sky full of galaxies known as Markarian’s Chain, I captured the rare moment of a red aurora borealis display glowing over Alqueva, as low as 38º latitude. It happened during the strong burst of activity with a severe magnetic storm reaching a geomagnetic K-index level of 8 between 00h45 and 02h15 (local time +1UT), and then decreasing to a Level k5. I had one of my cameras pointing to west region on a 300mm lens, covering a short field of view. We had a dark starry night, the sky was clear as shown on radar images. Our SQM system at the Observatory was registering the peak measurement of the red glowing light exactly at the same time that I had it visible on my images and the report from Spaceweather alert. Unfortunately I was too tired after a few consecutive nights shooting and was napping a bit between tasks and while my telescopes were working. I didn’t had my fish-eye all sky lens with me, so I had installed only one extra camera with a wide angle, which was pointing to the Milky Way – opposite direction – and started around 2AM when the level decreased suddenly, being registered only at the beginning of the time lapse. But fortunately the close-up deepsky sequence that covers the galaxy field, was showing at the end of the video an incredible red display which last for about 1h. In a question of a few minutes all the sky was fulfilled by an intense red glow coming apparently from “nowhere”, which impels me to believe that this could only be the result of an extreme aurora activity that was visible from all over northern Europe. My friend and TWAN colleague Alan Dyer pointed me to most plausible cause, an even rare type of auroras called SAR arc (Stable Auroral Red) arcs which were only discovered in 1956. Alan mentioned that “in the northern hemisphere, SARs occur south of the main aurora, and would be seen before any aurora itself appears at lower latitudes. They are almost always sub-visual but cameras pick them up easily”. I never saw something like that in my life, and it was not visible with naked-eye, I only noticed after being notified by Spaceweather alerts about the undergoing storm, and after checking if my deepsky camera was focused, but I remember to look up and think on that “weird reddish” light visible on my lcd screen, and even checked if the white balance was ok, but everything was set up properly as expected. Finally, I looked up to visually confirme if the sky was clean, and it was totally clear. Normally from Alqueva, I usual get green airglow on my photos, as red airglow is normally well seen in high altitude places, like Atacama or La Palma, and is indeed faint comparing to the level of brightness I get on histogram. We have confirmed and radar images shows that the sky was clear too, but I even checked the images from two nights before when I was capturing the same region of the sky but had a few high clouds and the appearance on the image is completely different, the image tends to be more pale white and faint galaxies simply vanish while stars shows a diffuse halo or a glow around them. And during the red aurora display the galaxies were still sharp as before and keep revealing the faint dusty oblong shape. Plus after checking Spaceweather website, I saw that an NLC camera located in Southern Spain (37ºN) captured the Northern Lights too, as well in Calar Alto Observatory.
Conclusion, I think that 24th April 2023 is probably an historic date and special moment for me, as the last confirmed reports about auroras in Portugal were from 85 years ago, on 25th de January 1938, and 66 years ago, on 21th January 1957 according to same archive news about this event, and none of them were about “SAR arc”.
The mosaic above shows single shot images from the time lapse sequence, regarding the wide field camera, and images from the left telescope lens. Centered reddish images was related with the middle of the most intense display around 01h38 (local time, with DST active is +1hUT) | PT: O mosaico acima mostra as imagens de disparo único a apartir da sequência time lapse, em relativas à câmara de grane campo e imagens do telescópio da esquerda a 300mm.

Solar Tornado Released into Space in a Time Lapse Captured from Portugal on 20th April 2023
On 20th of April 2023, I noticed that the solar chromosphere was featuring a gigantic prominence, so I prepared my solar telescope to start the photo session as I normally do when we have some interesting activity as well as clear and stable sky at Dark Sky® Alqueva region, in Portugal. After about 1h of images, I noticed that this prominence was growing even more which means that probably something bigger as about to happen and I couldn’t imagine that one of my dreams of capturing a Solar Tornado in motion was about to turn into reality. Due to my position on a terrace, my view at this time of the year is blocked after 4:30 PM, so I only had around 1h20m to keep capturing as much images as I could for a time lapse sequence that could show the evolution of this giant of plasma and the incredible moment when it suddenly lifted off, being released into space. According to Spaceweather.com “unlike tornadoes on Earth, which are shaped by wind, tornadoes on the sun are controlled by magnetism. Solar magnetic fields twist in a furious spiral, dragging clouds of plasma around with them. This particular tornado over-twisted, pinched off, and flew straight away from the sun. The debris will not hit Earth.” Here is the animations from NASA SDO and LASCO-c2 (Cactus CME detection) from this same day, showing the same giant as seen from the probe in Space. It seems that Cactus as detected also a CME or at least the release of this Tornado like if it was a CME. The final result is a 4K high resolution solar movie comprising 290 images over the course of about 2h, between UT13h15 and UT15h07.

Gigantic Solar Prominence in Motion from 29th January 2023
Captured on the 29th of January, 2023, from Dark Sky® Alqueva region, Portugal, a high-resolution image and time lapse sequence features the chromosphere activity, revealing a gigantic prominence in motion. It’s possible to see a lot of interesting changes on its shape. The size of this giant is stretching around the sun’s limb for thousands of kilometres being several times larger than our planet Earth. As comparison, it has a width beyond the largest system rings of planet Saturn. We can also notice a lot of fine spicules surrounding the solar disc and a fast eruptive prominence coming out from a sunspot, while the chromosphere itself is showing a slower motion. Conditions were good, so I’ve manage to make a time lapse of about 248 images. The final result is a 4K high resolution solar movie comprising around 1h20 minutes of photos.

Earth Shadow – The Beauty of a Total Lunar Eclipse in Motion
A video time lapse in 4K shows what is the deepest feeling of experiencing the incredible moment when the moon passes through the Earth’s shadow, giving the natural satellite a blood-red hue during a total lunar eclipse. The stars around the moon are again visible as the light of the moon drops drastically, giving rise to a unique moment of seeing the mesmerising presence of the Milky Way but at the same time, the shinning moon reflecting a low reddish light for being immersed inside the Umbra of the Earth shadow. The movie also intend to reveal the emotional feeling and ambience which surround us during this celestial event, when we are under the real darkness of a pristine starry sky like Mértola, in Dark Sky® Alqueva territory, Portugal. All the images were captured during the Total Lunar Eclipse of 16th May, 2022. For being near the closest point to our planet Earth, this Moon was also called a “Super Blood Moon”. According to timeanddate.com next Lunar Eclipse it will happen in 2023, on 5-6 May and will be a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse visible in Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Ocean and Antarctica. Close to the end of the year, on 28-29 October 2023, it wil be visible a Partial Lunar Eclipse, seen from Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, North America, Much of South America, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Arctic, Antarctica.

One Month of ZTF – The Green Comet in Motion Revealed in a 4k Time Lapse Video
A long video time lapse sequence comprising 5 nights of images spread over the course of January month 2023 (Jan. 3, 18, 22, 24 and 31) shows in a 4K resolution the motion of the so called “Green Comet” c/2022 E3 (ZTF) while travelling across the night sky over Dark Sky® Alqueva official observatory, in Cumeada village, Portugal. The video reveals key moments of its incredible activity starting to feature a wonderful greenish coma from glowing carbon gas and a white dust tail, until the main Disconnection Event happened on January 18, revealing a piece of the plasma tail being uprooted from the comet’s head, and then carried away by the solar wind. But ZTF didn’t stop to surprise, and also start to reveal a rare anti-tail which gradually changed the angle position while our planet Earth was crossing the orbital plane of the Comet. Meanwhile the main Ion tail was split in two blueish ion tails visible on Jan. 24. On January 31, the Comet was close to reach the maximum approach to Earth, and the anti-tail was largely scattered in the white dust revealing a dispersion and a low angle before start to vanish in the days ahead. The comet was photographed late in the night in all the sessions, starting at a distance of 146.1 million Km on Jan. 3, until being very close to our planet on Jan. 31 at a distance of only 43.1 million Km. The long distance traveller was moving fast against the background starry sky and the video also shows a few rapid greenish meteors crossing the field of view, as well as the moment when ZTF was crossing close to a few galaxies. I did a huge effort to create this movie, capturing and processing almost 1TB of data in a total of 10h comprised in 521 final images, to try to show the path of this wonderful visitor in the mesmerising moments of rare beauty provided to us by ZTF before it starts to fade way in a long journey of 50,000 years immersed in the deepest cold and darkness of the Solar System.

Disconnection of the Comet C/2022 E3 ZTF in Motion Revealed in a 4k Time Lapse Video
A video time lapse sequence comprising around 3h30 minutes of images shows in a 4K resolution the moment when the Disconnection Event happened in the Comet c/2022 E3 (ZTF) during the night of 19th January 2023, revealing a piece of the plasma tail being uprooted from the comet’s head, and then carried away by the solar wind. The movie also features the wonderful greenish coma from glowing carbon gas and rare anti-tail. The comet was photographed late in the night at a distance of 79 million Km from Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory in Portugal, during the last three hours and half before starts the astronomical twilight. This long distance traveller not seen in 50,000 years, was moving fast against the background starry sky while a few rapid greenish meteors were crossing the field of view too. That night, ZTF was located between constellations of Hercules, Corona Borealis and Bootes, showing a faint visual magnitude of +6.6. Although on 1st February the Comet it will be in the closest point to our planet and eventually until then could reach a naked eye magnitude, but this kind of objects are pretty unpredictable and we never know what surprise is waiting for us. A Solar Cloud in Motion and Sunspot AR3182 Releasing a Fast Eruptive Prominence – Photos and Time Lapse
Captured on the January 3rd and 5th, 2023, from Dark Sky® Alqueva region, Portugal, a high-resolution image and time lapse sequence features the chromosphere activity during two days in a row, showing the sunspot AR3182 throwing a short and fast eruptive prominence just few hours before releasing an X1.2 Flare which occured on Jan. 6th just before 0100 UT, unfortunatly nightime in Portugal. On the January 3, the solar chromosphere was also featuring a cloud of fire hovering over the sun, trapped and suspended by magnetic strong forces. It’s possible to see a lot of interesting changes in the shape of this “cloud”as well as on the prominence structures. We can also notice a lot of fine spicules surrounding the solar disc, while the chromosphere itself shows a slower motion. Conditions were good, so I’ve manage to make a time lapse of about 634 images for both days. The final result is a 4K high resolution solar movie comprising around 2h45 minutes of photos.

Partial Solar Eclipse with an Airplane Crossing in Front of the Sun’s Disc
I travelled to Antalya, in Turkey, to have a better weather and a larger percentage of the Partial Solar Eclipse visible, and bring with me my portable ED80 equipped with a Daystar Chromosphere filter. I was in the coastline and not farway from the airport, but didn´t imagine to have a lucky moment of capturing a nice plane crossing the only piece of the Sun which was not eclipsed by the Moon silhouette. Captured half an our before its ending, when was 11h38m UT (+3h Antalya) the image shows a single run of a few seconds in slow motion, revealing the waves of heat produced by the plane jets, causing turbulence in the atmosphere and distorting the moon’s limb. Another interesting phenomenon is visible, the contrails left behind from the aircraft, which in this case appeared as dark clouds for being against the bright disc of the sun. According to a BBC article: “Three things are needed for them to form: water vapour, cool air and particles on which the water vapour can condense. Water vapour is produced by planes as the hydrogen in its fuel reacts with oxygen in the air. In cold conditions (typically below around -40C (-40F)) it can condense, typically on the soot particles also emitted from aircraft engines, to a fog of droplets, which then freeze to form ice particles. The process broadly resembles frozen breath on a cold winter’s day. Not all aircraft produce contrails – they are estimated to occur in about 18% of flights. The air needs to be cool enough for the water to freeze, which is why they usually only appear above certain altitudes – typically 20,000ft (6km). In clear, cloudless air, contrails disappear quickly, as the dry ambient air makes the ice particles sublimate (pass from a solid to a gas). But if the atmosphere is humid, the ice particles cannot sublimate and contrails can linger for far longer.”

Until two years ago there were no video cameras on the market capable of recording with enough quality and in real time, in a night environment, the true magic of the starry sky, comparable to the visual experience that we can live in the event. With the support of @sony Madrid (@sonyalpha A7sIII) and many hours of dedication to prepare, test, film and edit, as I filmed everything in 4K footage with Slog3 which means that every individual clip is pure and flat but with the largest dynamic range possible. But it demands much more work on color correction, color grading and noise reduction….few hours of rendering too. But I arrived at the result which I’m pretty happy and glad to share with everyone today. I would say that a new world of possibilities has just opened in my mind. Mainly was filmed at ISO 160,000 yes, unbelievable!
Solar Flare M9 from AR3088 in Motion – Still Photos and Time Lapse
Captured on 29th August, 2022, from Dark Sky® Alqueva region, Portugal, a high-resolution image and time lapse sequence features the chromosphere activity on this day when Active Region AR13088 close to the sun’s western limb, released a powerful but short Solar Flare M8.6-class. Conditions were a bit unstable, but I’ve manage to make a short time lapse of about 329 images. The final result is a 4K high resolution solar movie comprising around 2 hours of photos.

Solar Time Lapse of a Great Prominence Releasing a CME into Space on 10Th July 2022
On 10th July, 2022, the Sun has featured a gigantic solar prominence over the chromosphere, throwing a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. Luckily I was checking the sun activity at the end of the day, as normally I don’t photograph the sun so late, specially for being low and close to the horizon. As soon as I realised that a huge prominence was visible and growing so fast and drastically, I quickly start shooting. Seeing forecast was amazing around 0,71″ arc. but the sun was lower than ideal and the atmosphere had a fine layer of dust coming from Africa. The temperature was very high, around 38º at 18h00. So I made a huge effort of gathering as much images as possible. The sequence was captured between UT17h37 and UT18h30 and shows spectacular motion of the CME. The gradual change in contrast in the solar disc, is related with the sun getting lower and crossing the dust layer which scattered the light even more. The final result is a 4K high resolution solar movie (at the end of this page) comprising around 1hour of images, captured from the Dark Sky® Alqueva region, Portugal. Here is the animations from NASA SDO and LASCO-c2 (Cactus CME detection) from this same day, showing the same giant as seen from the probe in Space. It is impressive the motion of the prominence in the time lapse, which seems to end up swirling like a tornado

Solar Time Lapse of a Large Prominence Releasing a CME
On 22th February, 2022, the Sun has featured a gigantic solar prominence over the chromosphere, throwing a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. This was my most stressful and lucky capture. As soon as I realised that the prominence was growing so fast and drastically, I had to quickly decide what to do. So I decided to interrupt the first sequence and rotate the camera framing again for the new composition, to be able to keep capturing this growing giant ejection. It’s the highest “flame” I saw and record until now. So tall comparing the Sun’s disc that we could fit probably dozens of planet Earths inside. Seeing was good, not perfect, but nice enough for a time lapse. So I made a huge effort of gathering as much images as possible. The sequence was captured between UT11h58 and UT14h16. The final result is a 4K high resolution solar movie comprising around 2hours and 15 minutes, captured from the Dark Sky® Alqueva region, Portugal. Here is the animations from NASA SDO and LASCO-c2 (Cactus CME detection) from this same day, showing the same giant as seen from the probe in Space.
Então decidi interromper a primeira sequência e girar a câmara para redefinir o novo enquaramento, e poder assim continuar a captar o crescimento dessa ejeção gigante.
