It was with enormous honor and joy that Dark Sky saw its work recognized worldwide in the grand final of the World Travel Awards, thus winning the World’s Responsible Tourism Award 2024. Pioneer in the development of astrotourism, has created its first destination in 2007, Dark Sky® Alqueva. It was the first Starlight Tourism Destination in the world and the first cross-border. Certified in 2011 by the Starlight Foundation, this destination currently comprises 11 municipalities in Portugal and covers an area of over 10,000 square kilometers around the Great Lake of Alqueva, including Spanish territory. Dark Sky® Alqueva has been an internationally awarded destination throughout its existence, a fact that motivates us and helps to renew the necessary strength to continue working towards sustainability and the protection of the night sky.
