Spaghetti Nebula – Echoes of a Stellar Death in a Beautiful Web of Intricate Filaments of H-alpha and OIII emission Revealed in Simeis 147

This deep-sky wide-field mosaic of two panels, captured through a dua-band H-alpha-OIII filter, and RGB light, unveils the hauntingly beautiful structure of Simeis 147 (Sharpless 2-240). Popularly known as the Spaghetti Nebula, this massive supernova remnant straddles the boundary between the constellations Taurus and Auriga, approximately 3,000 light-years from Earth. Spanning over 3 degrees—roughly six times the width of the full moon—the nebula reveals a violent history through its delicate morphology. While the dominant reddish hues trace the glow of ionized hydrogen (Ha), the image highlights a significant presence of doubly ionized oxygen (OIII). These teal-colored emissions often trace the strongest shock fronts where the expanding blast wave slams into the interstellar medium, creating a complex, multi-dimensional web of gas. From edge to edge, this debris cloud stretches across 150 light-years of space. The cataclysmic stellar explosion that birthed this structure is estimated to have occurred 40,000 years ago. It left behind not only these ethereal filaments but also a high-velocity pulsar (PSR J0538+2817)—a rapidly spinning neutron star kicked away from the explosion’s center, serving as a silent, dense heart to this expansive graveyard of gas. The image was captured from Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory, Cumeada, in Portugal.

A Nightscape Reveals the Ha emission along the path of Winter Milky Way Shining above Alqueva Lake

Always dreamed of capturing vast areas of the sky in Ha and to be able to reveal them on my nightscape scenes as a “bigger picture” of what is standing there unnoticed to our naked -Ha blind- eyes. Specially on the winter sky, for being so rich in Ha emission. This vast landscape captured from Campinho, at Dark Sky® Alqueva, Portugal, reveals all the Ha emission spread across the winter Milky Way faint path. Some of this includes the Orion complex (M42, Barnard’s Loop, and Lambda Orionis. At the lower center Rosette, Cone, Christmas Tree and Seagull nebulae. While at the center’s top, California and the Flaming Star nebula are shining bright, I was impressed with the detailed view of supernova remnants Simeis 147 made of reddish spaghetti filaments. Top left edge, reaveal the Heart and Soul bright nebulea. Between the Hyades and the Pleiades stars – top right corner – are visible dark shapes of interstellar dust. All of this forms a continuous network of ionized hydrogen that links the winter constellations in a unique cosmic tapestry. Above Alqueva lake and close to the horizon, bright stars like Sirius, Betelgeuse and Procyon are forming the asterism known as the Winter Triangle. On the left edge, Castor and Pollux from Gemini constellation, are colorful shining near the apparently brightest star visible on the image, which belong indeed, to the king of the Solar System, planet Jupiter. The image is a vertical mosaic of 8 single tracked images on a Polarie U, each one of 30 second exposure, captued with a Sigma 28mm f1.4 lens set to f2 on a Nikon Z8 astromodified camera. Later combined and registered with a much larger and wider Ha complex panorama captured from the same place, with a 50mm f1.2 and 7nm Baader Ha filter.

Solar Time lapse Reveals the Moment When Fast Hot Plasma Was Released into Space
Captured on the 5th July, 2025, from Dark Sky® Alqueva region, Portugal, a high-resolution image and time lapse sequence features the chromosphere activity on that day, revealing the exact moment when the hot plasma of an active prominence was released into space. Normally stuck by strong magnetic lines, when they broke, they can suddenly release in a fast way, huge amounts of plasma. During the time lapse, it’s possible to see interesting changes on its intricate shape. We can also notice a lot of fine spicules surrounding the solar disc and dancing like hair in the wind, while the chromosphere itself is showing a slower motion. The final result is a 4K high resolution solar time lapse footage comprising 353 image captured over the course of 1h50 min.

Massive Prominence in Motion Captured with the Soleye 300 Dual-band
I’m gradually starting to process many of the times lapses I’ve captured in 2025. This one features a gigantic prominence in motion captured on July 2nd, 2025, from Dark Sky® Alqueva region in Portugal, with the biggest setup, the Soleye 300 dual-band. This prominence was so impressive and massive that totally flooded the entire field of view of my Player One Camera. Conditions were not perfect due to unstable seeing and high thin passing clouds.

Extreme Wide Panorama of Winter Milky Way in Hydrogen-alpha Emission Reveals Deep Sky Wonders from Cygnus to Gum Nebula

I always dreamed about being able to capture an extreme large panorama in H-alpha to reveal all the nebulae visible in hydrogen emission along the path of Winter Milky Way, which is incredible rich. Finally last 20th November 2025 the opportunity arrived and I was able to achieve the goal on a winter clear night at Dark Sky® Alqueva region. I had a lot of challenges in the way to process this gigantic panorama. APP program totally fail for all my attempts due to the extreme size which overload its capacity, so I only calibrated the images there. And develop a different method using PT GUI Pro with as my favourite program for panoramas which worked pretty well and fast. As the original file resolution was more than 1 Billion pixels I had to resize it to be able to export as TIF as well as using camera raw. The final resolution is about 32000×16000. I also wanted to create a VR360 experience so the final panorama is an equirectangular image covering around 210º of the sky from edge to edge, beyond the Milky Way and Ha emission around like Eridanus Loop, there is a gradual fade to dark empty space. The final image is quiet big with more than half a billion Megapixels, from 46 single images of 3 minutes exposure each, using an adaptation I did for a Baader 7nm Ha filter screwed in front of my Sony 50mm GMaster f1.2 running on a Vixen Polarie U star tracker portable mount. I captured everything in one single night over the course of a few hours starting while Cygnus was setting and finished after Canis Major was very high, so I was able to capture the Ha emission from Cygnus region up to the beginning of Gum nebula, and I was so surprise for being able to capture it from our latitude of 38º at Dark Sky® Alqueva in Portugal. Below, is the monochromatic image of the red channel separately, as well as some close-ups at 75% of the real size and the VR360 image. I hope you enjoy it.

Below: Below you can experience a Virtual Reality 360º in 16K resolution using your desktop. If you use your smartphone with gyroscope on, you can explore up to the zenith where is visible the entire Eridanus Loop. A great “in loco” experience can be achieved if you wear a VR glasses.
