Northern Lights in Motion Dancing above Myvatn Lake – Photo and Time Lapse

Finally I got time to start processing the 12k images I took on our trip to Iceland this last September. Taken on the second night, after driving 10h heading north east, I caught a magical display of Northern Lights dancing above Myvatn lake while I was standing with my camera on the last pseudo crater. This is a time lapse of only 14 minutes, so look how fast and crispy they are . Skútustaðagígar pseudo craters are called pseudo craters as they are not caused by the actual explosion of volcanos, but are a byproduct of their flowing lava.

A Panoramic Scene from Icealnd Shows a Colorful Display of Northern Lights Dancing above a Lake in Krafla

On my long trip to Iceland, which happened in September of this year, I found in Krafla region this magical spot with a lake embedded in a small mountain facing north. The view from the top was impressive and it looks like a crater. Late in the night, northern lights arrived in full glory fulfilling the night sky with wonderful reddish, violet, pink and greenish colorful hues from the charged particle.

Southern Milky Way and Venus Corona with Zodiacal Light Shining Bright from Tongariro National Park in New Zealand

The image shows the starry night sky from the Southern Hemisphere captured from Tongariro Suites, a wonderful luxury accommodation located in National Park of Tongariro in New Zealand. Taken in May 2025 the weather was a bit unstable but I was fortunate to be able to capture the entire mosaic of the sky before it was totally covered by a layer clouds. With the hearth of Milky Way touching the Zenith and spread by many reddish nebulae from h-alpha emission, lower on the left side and in between the clouds, large and small Magellan clouds were shinning bright. In the opposite direction, right edge of this large panorama, planet Venus was revealing a bluish corona from a thin layer of clouds that refracting its light. Following the bright light upwards and there is the faint light from the Zodiacal plane. Scorpius constellation and the colorful nebulosity of Rho Ophiuchi dominates the central scene below the arc of Milky Way galaxy.

Sequence of the Crescent Moon Setting Revealing the Da Vinci Glow – Photo and Time Lapse

This is my favorite time of the month, when a slightly Crescent Moon is shiningly revealing the Da Vinci Glow. Described and drawn for the first time by Leonardo Da Vinci about 500 years ago on his book Codex Leicester, Leonardo da Vinci explained the phenomenon known as Earthshine in the early 16th century, when he realised that both Earth and the Moon reflect sunlight at the same time. Light is reflected from the Earth to the Moon and back to the Earth as earthshine. The time lapse sequence was captured during twilight in a nice landscape from Àger, Catalogina, 2h driving towards north of Barcelona.

Deep Nightscape With Milky Way and Summer Triangle Shinning in Ha light above the Lake

A deep nightscape I had the pleasure to capture recently in Catalonia, Àger, while was scouting for places to photograph the comet. This time I also used an additional Ha filter to reveal some of the beautiful emission near the top around North America nebula normally invisible to our eyes. While the well known asterism formed by bright Summer’s Triangle stars: Deneb, Vega and Altair, seems to dominate the entire secene, the core of Milky Way was setting behind the mountain. In the opposite direction, on the lower right edge, a bright flare was caught and reflected on the lake. Although, I’m not quite sure if it was a meteor or a bright Iridium, as I saw too many satellites that night.
Both single tracked exposures with a Vixen Polarie U (30 sec RGB and 85 sec Ha) Nikon Z8 on 16mm f1.8 Hope you enjoy it!

Nightscape of Comet Lemmon and Milky Way near a lake in Àger on a Happy Farewell

One of the best views I had from Comet Lemmon on the last 26th October as a happy farewell of a long journey visitor which gave to all of us incredible moments under the stars. The images were captured on a recent trip to Àger in Catalunha, Spain, in a magical place I found near the lake. Below is also included the 200mm close-up view captured immediately after this wide field scene where is possible to enjoy the Comet and the Milky Way core captured with a 16mm f/1.8. I hope you enjoy this last view, happy farewell!!

Comet Lemmon Farewell Time Lapse
Comet Lemmon Farewell
One of the best views I had from Comet Lemmon on the last 26th October as a happy farewell of a long journey visitor which gave to all of us incredible moments under the stars. The images were captured on a recent trip to Àger in Catalunha, Spain, in a magical place I found near the lake. Using a Z8 astro modified on a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 tracked on a Polarie U. The wide field scene could show the incredible extension of the undulated Ion tail from Comet Lemmon and some disconnection events happening in the so active ion tail! It’s also incredible to notice the unbelievable and undesired amount of satellites that in a short 30 minutes time lapse have crossed the field of view. I also processed the 200mm close-up time lapse in a special way, starting the scene with full of satellites, then without them (using my new clever technique to get read of them on time lapse in a simple easy way) and finally, with a starless version to just shows the motion of the tail. To nightscape near the lake while setting was captured at 70mm, with same equipment and mount. I hope you enjoy this last view, happy farewell!
PT: Despedida do Cometa Lemmon

Undulated Long Ion tail from Comet Lemmon Caught on 26th October with a 200mm Lens

One of the best views I had from Comet Lemmon on the last 26th October, also the last night with clear sky which means probably my last opportunity to capture this solar system visitor. The image was captured on a recent trip to Àger in Catalunha, Spain, using a Z8 astro modified on a Nikon 200mm f/2.8 tracked on a Polarie U, as result of a short stack of 20x 30 secs expousure. The wide field scene could show the incredible extension of the undulated Ion tail from Comet Lemmon! I hope you enjoy this last view, happy farewell! A time lapse available here.
Video time lapse disponível aqui.

Comet C/2025 A6 Lemmon Featuring a Beautiful Long Tail During a Disconnection Event

The image shows Comet c/2025 A6 Lemmon as seen on October 03. Besides the wonderful greenish coma from glowing carbon gas the image reveals a very long tail immersed in a colorful starfield. The comet features a bluish ion tail and a shorter white dust tail on the image. The comet was photographed two hours before morning Twilight from Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory in Portugal. This long distance traveller has been so active, that in a few minutes the structure changes in the comet’s tail, being most likely the result of being buffeted by the solar wind as well as the dynamic jets inside its own core. This particular night, we could also noticed some disconnection event. A piece of Comet’s tail has been disconnected and being carried away by the solar wind. Lemmon is also moving fast against the background starry sky, and that night it was located between Lynx constellation and Ursa Major, at a distane of 0.9 AU (145.9 million kms).

A Nice Prominence Visible on the Solar Limb Captured with Soleye 300 Dual Band
Captured with giant Soleye 300 dual-band, the image reveals a prominence full of activity. Clouds came in, so I was not able to capture a long time lapse this time, but I move forward and process only this one I’m sharing today! In less than an hour due to the interaction between magnetic fields the left prominence totally vanished. The image was captured on 6th September 2025, at UT21h21 from Dark Sky® Alqueva, Portugal.

Milky Way Core Shining Bright in a Wide Panorama from the Southern Skies

The image shows the starry night sky from the Southern Hemisphere captured at a high altitude of 4120 meters, in the top of the mountains from Cusco, Peru. The core of Milky Way galaxy was visible high at south west while summer triangle was rising in the opposite direction. Not far away, close to the horizon and immersed in the reddish beautiful airglow, was rising the Andromeda galaxy M31. Above Milky Way core and along the ecliptic path crossing the zenith, we can find the faint glow of a Gegenschein, in the opposite direction of the colorful nebulosity of Rho Ophiuchi.

Convective Cells and Intergranular Filigree Surrounding Active Region 4122
Glad to share with you what I believe being my most detailed image so far captured with Soleye 300 dual-band on the photosphere, revealing the diversity of sizes and shapes of convective cells and intergranular filigree, visible in G-band with 2nm filter. At the center lies the small sunspot AR4122 captured from Dark Sky® Alqueva territory in Portugal on 2nd July 2025 at around UT 1025 in the morning during a moment of great seeing stability. What are then these Granules? The 4 cropped images at 100% zoom visible below, can easily help to understand the explanation by Dr. Jan Jurcák, from the Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic:
“The solar surface is constantly heated from deeper layers. The heating is provided in the form of bubbles of hot material that rise convectively through the sub-surface layers. These convective cells are called granules and appear as bright dots on the solar surface. Their typical size is around 1000 km. Granules are sensitive to the presence of magnetic field. Their shapes, sizes and lifetimes are highly dependent on the magnetic field properties. With increasing field strength, the granules become smaller. In the extreme cases of sunspots, the magnetic field is strong enough to suppress convective motions, the solar surface cools down considerably and appears dark compared to its surroundings. The magnetic field is strongest in the darkest regions, but its presence can be recognised also in other areas, where the granules are smaller, brighter, or very elongated, and in the myriad of tiny bright points sitting in between the granules.“ These images were captured from Dark Sky® Alqueva, Portugal.

Solar Chromosphere Revealing a Plasma Eruption of Fine Lines and a “Surface Shaped Like Braids of Hair”
After doing the first tests on the photosphere, I’ve prepared Soleye 300 to look into the chromosphere and fortunately I caught this beautiful AR close to the solar limb during a small eruption while it was featuring a great display of fine lines of plasma. Over the disc, which I will call “surface” the image was revealling intricate shapes and depressions resemble braids of hair while small filaments, maybe reminds me the curves of snakes. The image was captured on 15th June 2025, at UT13h37 from Dark Sky® Alqueva, Portugal.

Solar Photosphere – Convective Cells Surrounding Sunspot AR 4114 Reveals Different Shapes, Sizes and Elongation
This is the first light of Soleye 300 dual-band on the photosphere, revealing the shape of convective cells – granulation – in continuum emission with Baader Calcium GENII (Ca-K 5nm filter). The image shows a close-up of a group of sunspots named as Active Region 4114, and if you notice carefully they are surrounded by hundreds of granules. Ground seeing has a role on allowing us to achieve the diffraction limit of the telescope and this is yet far from from its maximum power resolution, but I’m excited to the level of detail just in poor-average seeing conditions, as it seems to be very promising. What are then these Granules? The 4 cropped images at 100% zoom visible below, can easily help to understand the explanation by Dr. Jan Jurcák, from the Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic:

Incredible Solar Tornado in Motion Visible in the Chromosphere on April 24th 2025 – Photos and Time Lapse
I was photographing the Sun for two days in a row to documenting the evolution of a nice large prominence in motion. So on the second day, April 24th, I did one of the largest time lapses so far with 3h46 minutes, comprising 550.000 images in a short sequence of 18 seconds. I didn’t notice until I processed and animate the sequence at 30 fps, the large prominence was revealing what seems to be the formation of a quick and large Solar Tornado!! Insane, so take a look of the video until the end, please, and you will be surprised. Below is possible to watch the 4k video time lapse sequence compiling 534 shots processed, each one as result of a stack of the best 200 frames from each raw video. The images were captured from Dark Sky® Alqueva, Portugal, with the new Apollo 428M Max Pro camera from Player One. To watch with sound on.

Deep Wide View of Orion Constellation Immersed in a Giant Reddish Cloud of Hydrogen

The image features an HaRGB deep wide view of Orion Constellation immersed in the reddish hues from hydrogen alpha emission, where the larger semi-circle (Sh2-276) that stands around the belt and sword of Orion, also known as Barnard’s Loop, is shiningly visible like a dense intricate wave across the scene. Located at a distance of 1600 light-years away, the entire loop spans at about 300 light-years across in space and belongs to an even bigger Molecular Cloud of dust and gas, made up of molecular hydrogen and helium. These clouds are the birth place for stars, forming out of the material in the cloud. I always wanted to make an image like that showing all the beautiful reddish hydrogen that is surrounding one of the most spectacular and colourful regions of the entire night sky as seen from Earth, comprising known wonders like M42, Horse Head, LDN 1622, the large Lambda Orionis Ring and the bluish (OIII) Witch Head Nebula, close to Rigel star. As I only had the particular setup (Samyang 35mm f1.8 with Poseidon C Pro) available and prepared for this target two months before Orion constellation starts to set early against the western horizon and weather was not collaborating too, Orion was almost setting from our Observatory at Dark Sky® Alqueva, Portugal, which made a bit challenging to get this image done. Basically I only had 40 minutes of available sky for each clear night between February and March 2025, so to collecting 7h of good data it took me several nights which I could do it in one single night if it was done in the beginning of Winter. But here it is and I hope you enjoy the result.

View of the Chromosphere During Partial Solar Eclipse 2025 – Images and Time Lapse
Captured on 29th March 2025, a high-resolution image and time lapse sequence features the chromosphere activity on a special day, when a Partial Solar Eclipse was visible from from our Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory, in Portugal, reaching about 30% of occultation. The time lapse sequence comprises two hours and 442 images and the same data was processed in two total different ways to shows the details on the “surface” of the chromosphere with the moon revealing its dark disc, but as well as processed with a curves inversion to help show the prominences and the light flow around, with a nice level of depth and detail. In the 4k video we can see a transition between both visions while close to the maximum of the eclipse, is possible to see a little flare at the center of the image. These are real images and not AI generated in any sense!! They have been captured with a Lunt LS100 solar telescope and a Player One Apollo-M Max.

Large Solar Promience and AR-Flare in motion from 8th January 2025 – Time Lapse
The image and time lapse reveals the chromosphere activity on 18th January 2025, with a large prominence in motion, while an Active Region (sunspot) visible in the corner was releasing a nice eruptive filament (prominence in front of the disc). Stability of the atmosphere was average to poor, but I could capture enough images to produce the time lapse. They have been captured with a SW Esprit 120mm and a Quark Prominence filter, with the new Apollo 428M Max Pro camera from Player One Astronomy. Below is possible to watch the video time lapse sequence compiling 162 shots processed, each one as result of a stack of the best 200 frames from each raw video. The final result is a 4K high resolution time lapse movie comprising around 50 minutes of images.

A Faint Giant Prominence in Motion Captured on 21st December, 2024
Captured last year on December 21, from Dark Sky® Alqueva region, Portugal, a high-resolution image and time lapse sequence features the chromosphere activity. This was my first light with the new Apollo 428M Max Pro camera from Player One Astronomy, and thanks to its high sensitivity and low noise cooled at -10, I was able to reveal this giant faint prominence in motion, dozens of times larger than our planet Earth. Stability of the atmosphere was average and the prominence was so so faint that I had to overexpose during the capture to reveal details, using then a black disc on post processing to cover the surface like a coronograph, helping drive our attention to most interesting regions of the image. The final result is a 4K high resolution solar time lapse footage comprising around 1h15 of photos.
Above are still images captured at different times. Below is possible to watch the video time lapse sequence compiling 211 shots processed, each one as result of a stack of the best 200 frames from each raw video. The final result is a 4K high resolution time lapse movie comprising around 1h15 of images.

Nostalgia with a Glimpse of our Future while Reaching out Other Distant Worlds like Mars

When one day we could reach other places in the Solar System…like Mars, nostalgia will come, specially when we realise that we no longer be able to watch our beautiful blue skies of Earth atmosphere. Instead, the rocky red planet Mars, will show a yellow pale glow on a dusty atmosphere and humans will not be able to breath and feel the outside air fresh on their skin. We are so lucky to be here…Now, in this small glimpse of the evolution of humankind! The time lapse was captured last year on the moonrise, from Mertola, at Dark Sky® Alqueva, in Portugal when my wife Apolónia Rodrigues was enjoying the moment, and for a second, seems to catch the Moon with her hand.

Total Lunar Eclipse Close-up Immersed in a Layer of Clouds

After finishing this image I thought….well many people will probably think that this is AI, because it seems that the moon is in between the clouds which would be odd and impossible of course, but no, this is not AI! It is a true image of the Eclipsed Moon as seen behind an intense layer of passing clouds, creating this crazy optical illusion. Below a short time lapse sequence of this moment shows how real it was. Using an HDR technique I could then recover the details on the bright side of the moon, the region not fully immersed in the Earth Shadow. Captured with a 600mm lens from Costa da Caparica, Portugal.

M31 Immersed in Cosmic Clouds of Glowing Ionized Hydrogen in a Colorful Starry Scene

5 Years after my first attempt of capturing Andromeda galaxy surrounded by faint Ha clouds taken with a DSLR camera back in 2020, and inspired by the recent discover by STROTTNER-DRECHSLER-SAINTY of the OIII emission arc, I decided to get back to M31 and try my Luck. The image features a long integration of around 80h in HaOIII emission using a dual band filter, to show the colorful field of faint glowing ionized hydrogen gas where the galaxy seems to be immersed in. Despite these faint clouds, all the galaxy shape has a strong emission visible with Ha 3nm filter. The large-scale clouds formations visible in the foreground, belongs to our own Milky Way as well as the several distinct colorful stars which surrounds the diffuse spiral shape. While its spiral arms stand out in visible light, the arms look like rings in the GALEX ultraviolet views. Being sites of intense star formation, the rings have been interpreted as evidence that Andromeda collided with its smaller neighbouring elliptical galaxy M32 more than 200 million years ago. Even with all my efforts and challenges along the way, 80h where not enough to achieve the demanding level of good data needed for revealing the faint OIII arc, specially difficult in OSC cameras, so after analysing the data with the help of my experienced friend Yann Saint, I took the decision of not include the OIII data on the arc for being insufficient to reveal the proper expected shape and detail. Still, the OIII signal included and visible in the arms of M31 could reveals dozens of planetary nebulae. With approximately 220,000 light-years across, Andromeda is the largest galaxy of the Local Group, which also contains the Milky Way, the Triangulum galaxy, and about 30 other smaller galaxies. I also decided to present my final view of M31 in a little different way, framing with a rotation that could help conducts our attention to the most interesting parts of the immersive hydrogen scene, keeping in mind to preserve the natural level of brightness on the core, giving a final nice light flow. So I hope you enjoy my result. The image was captured from Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory, Cumeada, in Portugal.

Bluish Planetary Nebulae HFG1 and Abell 6 Immersed in a Glowing Field of Hydrogen Gas

Captured in HaOIII and RGB light, the image features a deep wide field view immersed in the glow of ionized hydrogen gas, where small planetary nebulae Abell 6 and larger HFG1 (Heckathorn-Fesen-Gull 1 nebula type) seems to live, in the constellation of Cassiopeia. Being both remnants from the last phase of a medium star like our Sun. HFG1 features a bluish arc shaped shock wave, created by the binary star system V664 Cas, which comprises a white dwarf and a red giant star only a few million kilometres apart from each other. The small bright bluish ball visible near the center of the image, is known as Abell 6. Those kind of planetary nebulae, has a short life span of only about 10,000 years, becoming then invisible due to a lack of ultraviolet light emitted by the stars that create them. The image was captured from Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory, Cumeada, in Portugal.

Planets Aligned with Zodiacal Light agains the Winter Path of Milky Galaxy

The faint path of Zodiacal Light shining along the ecliptic plane, also highlighting some of the brightest planets visible in the winter starry skies of Dark Sky® Alqueva region, Portugal. Best seen between late January and early April from the northern hemisphere at the end of nautical twilight, the zodiacal light is a faint light beam that extends along the ecliptic plane, where are located the constellations of the Zodiac. It is caused by the scattering of sunlight in cosmic dust particles that can be found scattered all over the Solar System. In conjunction and close to the horizon, against the faint light are shining planet Venus and Saturn. Neptune and Uranus are also marked on the photo, but not visible with naked eye. Follow the faint path we will find at the zenith, Planet Jupiter, not faraway from Pleiades star cluster. In the opposite direction, the red planet, Mars, is forming a perfect line with Castor and Pollux, the main bright stars from Gemini constellation. High in the sky, at the right side of Zodiacal light and close to the winter Milky Way path, Andromeda galaxy M31 and M33 are still visible. Below you can experience a Virtual Reality 360º in 7K resolution using your desktop, or smartphone with gyroscope. A great “in loco” experience can be achieved if you wear a VR glasses.
