Stunning View of Milky Way and Comet A3 Atlas in Between a Dead Tree Captured with Smartphone Google Pixel 9 Pro XL from Dark Sky® Alqueva in Portugal
I believe this is probably one of my best images of the Comet A3 Atlas. And if I tell you that it was not taken with any fancy DSLR or Mirrorless camera…but, with the new smartphone: Google Pixel 9 Pro XL…insane, right?! This is a photo I captured from Dark Sky® Alqueva territory, in Portugal, on 25th October 2024 and it shows the Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas, crossing the skies close to Milky Way galaxy and in between the branches of a dead tree, near Alqueva lake. What an incredible nigh! This is a single 4 minutes integration in Night Mode, without star tracker, where the Pixel 9 combines 15 short exposures of 16 seconds each. The 50 MP Raw (DNG 16 bits file) was then processed in Adobe Camera Raw like a normal nightscape astrophotography. The Smartphone Google Pixel 9 Pro XL they will definitely be a game changer!

Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas Shining in All Its Glory
Finally I got time to process my close-up image taken from Dark Sky® Alqueva with 300mm prime lens f2.8, on 13th October, when C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas was revealing an impressive level of brightness and details, as well as a cool anti-tail frontal spike. It seems that the ion tail is also visible and a prominent dust tail. I processed this one with my deepsky techniques to recover as much as possible the original color and details hidden in the dust tail, washed out, easily, due to the bluish background scattered light from Moon and Twilight. 75 short exposures of 10 seconds at ISO1600, comprising around 12 minutes of images.

Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas Featuring an Anti-Tail while Shining Under the Moonlight
Yesterday 13th October 2024, was a special day to capture the Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS as the Earth was passing through the comet’s orbital plane, and this is causing the comet to sprout an ‘anti-tail.’ It’s clearly visible the frontal spike coming out of the comet’s head. The image was taken from a beautiful field at Dark Sky® Alqueva territory in Portugal. The Moonlight was shining bright so it helped to illuminate quite well the landscape. Now the comet is clearly visible with naked-eye. I have more images and time lapses so stay tuned.
Agora o cometa é claramente visível a olho nu. Em baixo é ainda possível ver um time lapse do momento e um “behind the scene” captado pela Apolónia Rodrigues com um iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas Above Atlantic Ocean After Emerging from the Sun’s Glare
Yesterday 12th October 2024, we drove 200km to be near the Alentejo coast, in Melides, to avoid the clouds which were spread all over the country and had a clear view near the Atlantic Ocean. It was cloudy and a bit hazy but fortunately I finally get a nice first view after C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas emerge from the Sun’s glare. It was though to find it, only around 19h30 it starts to be visible but not yet with naked eye. I think it worth the efforts. Upcoming days could reveal an even more spectacular show, as comet increases altitude. Let’s pray to get the clouds away. Stay tuned.
Fique atento.

Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas Under the Morning Twilight above Alqueva lake, Portugal
Another view of C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas near the lake Alqueva at Dark Sky® Alqueva certified territory, in Portugal, taken three days ago (29th September) in the morning twilight. Brightness keeps increasing but as well as the twilight interference so it’s not yet, so spectacular as it is in the southern hemisphere or equator. Let’s hope for the best display after mid October when it will reach the closest point to Earth on the 12th.

One Month of ZTF – The Green Comet in Motion Revealed in a 4k Time Lapse Video
A long video time lapse sequence comprising 5 nights of images spread over the course of January month 2023 (Jan. 3, 18, 22, 24 and 31) shows in a 4K resolution the motion of the so called “Green Comet” c/2022 E3 (ZTF) while travelling across the night sky over Dark Sky® Alqueva official observatory, in Cumeada village, Portugal. The video reveals key moments of its incredible activity starting to feature a wonderful greenish coma from glowing carbon gas and a white dust tail, until the main Disconnection Event happened on January 18, revealing a piece of the plasma tail being uprooted from the comet’s head, and then carried away by the solar wind. But ZTF didn’t stop to surprise, and also start to reveal a rare anti-tail which gradually changed the angle position while our planet Earth was crossing the orbital plane of the Comet. Meanwhile the main Ion tail was split in two blueish ion tails visible on Jan. 24. On January 31, the Comet was close to reach the maximum approach to Earth, and the anti-tail was largely scattered in the white dust revealing a dispersion and a low angle before start to vanish in the days ahead. The comet was photographed late in the night in all the sessions, starting at a distance of 146.1 million Km on Jan. 3, until being very close to our planet on Jan. 31 at a distance of only 43.1 million Km. The long distance traveller was moving fast against the background starry sky and the video also shows a few rapid greenish meteors crossing the field of view, as well as the moment when ZTF was crossing close to a few galaxies. I did a huge effort to create this movie, capturing and processing almost 1TB of data in a total of 10h comprised in 521 final images, to try to show the path of this wonderful visitor in the mesmerising moments of rare beauty provided to us by ZTF before it starts to fade way in a long journey of 50,000 years immersed in the deepest cold and darkness of the Solar System.

A Last Charm of Comet ZTF While Reaching the Closest Point to our Planet Earth
The image shows a close-up view of Comet c/2022 E3 (ZTF) on January 31, 2023, just a few hours before it reach the maximum approach to our Planet Earth. Still featuring the wonderful greenish-blue coma from glowing carbon gas, the rare anti-tail is now pointing towards down due the actual position in the orbital plane. The comet is now showing almost a single distinct ion tail. This was perhaps my last image of this beauty due to the full moon presence acting as a natural source of light pollution and the fact that from now on, the comet it will decrease in brightness as is starts to fade way in a long journey of 50,000 years immersed in the deepest cold and darkness of the Solar System. This cosmic portrait also reveals dozens of galaxies surrounding the Comet dust. Captured late in the night at a distance of 43.1 million Km from Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory in Portugal. ZTF was located in the constellation of Camelopardalis, showing a faint visual magnitude of +5.4.

The image shows a close-up view of Comet c/2022 E3 (ZTF) during 24th January 2023. Besides the wonderful greenish coma from glowing carbon gas the image reveals a rare anti-tail due the fact that planet Earth was crossed the orbital plane of Comet ZTF showing the tail in perspective and immersed in a colorful starfield. One thing I noticed from the previews nights, is the low angle of the frontal tail compared to the images I made on 22th Janurary, as it now shows a slightly change in the angle. The comet if also featuring two distinct bluish ion tails and the white dust tail on the image, is crossing in front of a background galaxy. The comet was photographed late in the night at a distance of 59.8 million Km from Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory in Portugal. This long distance traveller not seen in 50,000 years, is moving fast against the background starry sky, and that night it was located close to the star Edasich, from Draco constellation, showing a faint visual magnitude of +6.0. On 1st February the Comet it will be in the closest point to our planet and eventually until then, it could reach a naked eye magnitude.

Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) during Perihelion Revealing a Glowing Greenish Coma and Long Ion Tail
The image shows a close-up view of Comet c/2022 E3 (ZTF) during Perihelion, when it was close to the Sun, on 12th January 2023. Featuring a wonderful greenish coma from glowing carbon gas and a long ion tail by the ions ejected from the icy comet nucleus, the comet was photographed late in the night at a distance of 108 million Km from Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory in Portugal, two hours before starts the astronomical twilight. This long distance traveller not seen in 50,000 years, is moving fast against the background starry sky, and that night it was located between constellations of Hercules, Corona Borealis and Bootes, showing a faint visual magnitude of +7.3. Although on 1st February the Comet it will be in the closest point to our planet and eventually until then could reach a naked eye magnitude, but this kind of objects are pretty unpredictable and we never know what surprise is waiting for us.

Stargazing Comet Leonard with Planet Venus Against the Nautical Twilight
The image shows Comet Leonard c/2021 A1 captured at dusk from Dark Sky® Alqueva lake against the nautical twilight colors, on last 17th December 2021. Planet Venus is shinning high in a moonlight sky and reflecting its strong light in the lake surface, while a stargazer is pointing his arm to the faint comet, gradually decreasing in brightness, is barely visible even with binoculars.

Comet Neowise Featuring Synchronic Bands, Green Coma and Bluish Ion Tail
The image shows a close-up view of Comet Neowise C/2020 F3 featuring a detailed view of Synchronic bands, also known as “striae,” these bands are dividing the comet’s dust tail into linear regions of greater and lesser density. According to Spaceweather, “Synchronic bands have been seen in comet tails for centuries, yet only recently have astronomers begun to understand what they are. The turning point came in 2007 when European and NASA spacecraft observed the formation of striae in Comet McNaught (C/2006 P1). The process starts when a chunk of comet detaches itself from the nucleus. Boulder-sized chunks fragment into smaller and smaller pieces, a cascade shaped into long streamers by solar radiation pressure”. Also visible in this portrait sky scene captured with a telephoto lens of 140mm and tracked with a portable mount Vixen Polarie, is a long blueish ion tail made by ionised gas – gas energised by ultraviolet light from the Sun and pushed outward by the solar wind. Travelling at a speed of 231 000km/h, the comet orbits the sun every 6,800 to 7,000 years. Neowise is currently at about 111 million kilometres away from Earth, while featuring a 5km in diameter green head of diatomic carbon (C2) – gas fluorescing in sunlight which is producing the coma’s green color. Captured on 17th July 2020 from Pampilhosa da Serra, territory of Dark Sky Aldeias do Xisto, central region of Portugal.

Celestial Encounter Between Comet 46P/Wirtanen, Pleiades, California Nebula and a Meteor
A wide-field scene shows Comet 46P/Wirtanen in Taurus constellation, making an historic close approach to Earth. Being only 11.5 million km away from us, the small comet is barely visible to the unaided eye, showing in a telescopic view a beautiful greenish-blue coma. Besides the visible comet, this panoramic scene composed of 3 panes captured from Cumeada Observatory in Dark Sky® Alqueva Reserve, is also featuring near the center of the frame a blueish cluster of hot and young stars known as Pleiades (M45). In the right edge, we can find California Nebula (NGC 1499), while a meteor from Geminids was crossing the sky and releasing a plume of smoke only perceptible in the sequence of shots.

Comet 21p/Giacobini-Zinner Approaching Open Cluster M37
A rich starfield in Auriga constellation shows a close-up view of a bright tail and greenish coma from Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner only separated by approximately 1º from the colourful and brightest open cluster in Auriga, M37 (at right), with an apparent magnitude of 6.2, lies at a distance of 4,511 light years from our Solar System. On 10th September 2018, the comet Giacobini-Zinner was near its perihelion and closest approach to Earth in 72 years, being only at a distance of 58 million km from our planet, was shining like a 7th magnitude star, remaining too faint to our naked-eyes though. This periodic comet is the known parent body of the upcoming Draconid meteor shower, a bursty display that typically peaks on Oct. 8th. Draconid outbursts do tend to occur in years near the comet’s close approach to the sun. However, leading forecasters do not expect an outburst this year despite the comet’s flyby. The image was captured from Cumeada Observatory official headquarters of Dark Sky® Alqueva Reserve, Portugal.

A Short Journey from the Heavens of Dark Sky Alqueva up to the Comet Lovejoy
In the movie sequence below, resulting in the final still picture above, we can dip into a short journey that starts in the land of Juromenha, in Dark Sky Alqueva Reserve, Alentejo, with a stargazer trying to find with their own eyes and binoculars the glowing green head of Comet Lovejoy. After a few seconds we will zoom in, entering in a real time lapse sequence capturing the slowly movement of the comet and their ion blue tail, made by ionized gas – gas energized by ultraviolet light from the Sun and pushed outward by the solar wind – while it is crossing some stars of Taurus constellation. Finally, we will zoom out in a final still photograph that shows the strong and huge green head of diatomic carbon (C2) – gas fluorescing in sunlight that produces the coma’s green color – as well as a wide view of the entire fainter bluish tail, with more then 5 million kilometers at the comet’s estimated distance of 75 million kilometers from Earth.

Comet PanSTARRS over Almada
After a few days of rain and clouds in the horizon, I can finally photograph the comet PanSTARRS in the portuguese sky. Actually, I was arrived from a weekend photo trip and was exausted, but the sky was totally clear, so, I found some “extra forces” to delay my sleep, and I´ve tried to find this view from my home window.
Near and below the comet there was two stars with a magnitude of +6.3. (HIP2734 / HIP 2832).The image was captured in the city of Almada, near Lisbon, Portugal.
